A Shetland JLocliiiiTnr.
Tho little hamlets or clusters of fishermen’s cot-
taoes iu Shetland, sro almost always built close
to C the chores of the narrow sounds which separate
the different islands, or of those arms of theses
called t-oet, with which the land is everywhere
deeply indented. Oue of the longest and most
solitary of these voes is the scene of our story.—
The adjacent hills were covered with black peat-
moss, and eloped pretty steeply dowu to the wa
ter's ed-’e. At the head of the voe, just where a
rapid brook found its way through an expanse or
silvery snud into theses, whose wintry waves of-
ten swelled the little stream with their briny flood
for a considerable distance inland, stqod two or
three straw-thatched cottages, surrounded by a
few patches of cultivated land. All the rest of
the scenery wns drear and black. v Several boats
were drawn up on tlie flat beach, n stone’s cast
from thaoottages; they wereanrroundedby a low
dyke of rough stones, aud witbm this slight micloa-
pi-eou one occasion stood u pairofyouthful lovers.
They had grown up from childhood together, but
tbeir coarse of love was Dot to run smooth. The
maiden was fair and gentle—she was u! ways si
lent cud reserved, though, could her heart have
been rend, it would have been seen that few loved
more deeply. Her father was wliat is called “well
to do'* among his class, and he brought up his fam
ily to careful industry. He had cattle, and sheep,
and ponies, aud us lio regularly- paid bis rent by
the produce of his fishing, ho was generally able,
aud about reconing time, to add something ta the
small board in his landlord’s hands. The young
man's contiexions.on the contrary, were unsteady
and thriftless, and thi*. the youngest son. was uow
about to follow several others vvho bad gone
abroad as seamen Willie, it might be thought,
had un endearing tie to his birthplace, as.he^ felt
the clasping hand of the young girl by his side ;
hut yet it seemed too fragile to restain his restless
desire of desultory rambling, especially when the
well-understood objection of the tnaideu'6 family
to their union was considered. So, on that still
spring evening, with tbe holy stars alone witnes
ses of their tryst, by the boat-noost, Willie aud En-
ga said their parting words, aud made their |>qrt-
ing vows.
Several years passed, and Euga never heard of
or from her absent lover! This is, unfortunately,
an occurrence too common iu Shetland families,
where any of the members lmve gone a_ roving, to
cause much surprise ; but it did occasion tender
and lasting regret in one fond bosom, which
breathed tunny a secret sigh to the hallowed mem
ory of n first love.
Now Euga had several wooers. Her parents
were worldly wise, aud, after the most ancient and
approved methods of cruel parents, eudeavored to
persuade liieir daughter that her lover was false—
was dead—was, iu abort, no louger to be thought
of and that she must forthwith wed another—a
much richer, though, sooth to Bay, less loveable
bridegroom. Euga was persuaded—over-persua*
ded, it matters uot how-. Whisper it not to tlie
stars, guardian spirit ol faithful love ! The sim
ple bridal arrangements were made—the “con*
t act day ” arrived—a goodly number of guest as
sembled, lor whom abundauce of excellent appro
priate cheer was provided. The mother bus
tled nbnut in the joy of her heart. The father,
equally- self-satisfied, was more dignified in his hos
pitable duties—sisters dressed and smiled—broth-
err boisterously merrv—and all were glad, as be
seemed the occasion, hut one ! A br.de is uot ex
pet ted to be gav ; bnt Enga did not even look
quietly happy. "She was pale and abstracted, and
at times even seemed qs if not quite satisfied she
ivns acting rightly. She remained calm, however,
till her father, in askiug for a blessing ou the food,
added a shmt petition that the iuteuded nuptials
might be happy aud prosperous. Then Enga turn
ed aside to wipe the scalding tears that rolled
dowu her wnn face, and the old grandgroe shook
her head, and muttered that—
“Threaten’d love, and terawn kiss
Never deserved wedded bliss!"
The first dish of tea bad been taken. This re
freshment is always made a meal of, and is linger
ed over in quiet cnjoyuieut, while the kuitlius-
needles jdy busily. During the iutervul that fol
lowed, when tho conversation (or gossip, if tho
render pleases.) was general, a slight signal from
a serving-girl near tlie door called Enga’s atten
tion. Internally wondering forwhat purpose she
could be wanted on that occasion, yet glad to es
cape from observation for a time, tho btitle stole
out. A young matt met her near the doorway,
and 6ayiug there was oue at baud who wished to
speak a word to her, he led her towards the sea-
beach. It was a wild night iu midwinter; a driz-
zliug rain was driven by the sighing wind into
mist again, aud Euga shivered as she lelt the cold
damp of tlie air.iu contrast with the cheerful light
and overheated atmosphere she had left. But in
an instant all this was forgotten, as she felt a man?
ly-arm encircle her, and heaid a voice she thought
she ought to know, whisper tremblingly—“Is it to
Cud my Euga tbe bride of another I am cornel”—
The poor gill, in pitiable bewilderment, could
only gasp out “she thought he never would come
back any more.*'
“It is not too late,” was the hurried n-jotifler-.
“will ton come with tne, ray first, my only love!”
A willing uflirmativo was hardly spoken, ere she
was hurried off, nothing loath, between her old
lover aud bis companion who had first accosted
her. They cauieto the boat-noosl, the trysling
place of their young affection, where they had
parted, and as each recalled those scenes, they
pressed closer to one another—sacrctl memories
thrillcf] at their hearts! A boat lay ready afloat
bale out the water that bad
their frail vessel.
A short time afterwards, the voyagers welcomed
tho light that showed tho dwelling they were
hound for—that of tlie schoolmaster and parish
clerk, Here they landed, thoroughly wet, ami
stiff with cold, and here it limy bo said Euga first
saw her returned lover. Dripping, disordered,
well-nigh exhausted with fatigue ami contending
emotions its he was, ,'i.- was sli!i gratefully con
scious ho was the Willie of her early dreams.-^
Then, too, she learned that he hod only reached
his native shore the day previously, aud by mere
accident; met an old neighbor, win* informed him
that Euga was on tbe eve < f marriage. Without a
moment's delay beset off, hoping to be in time, yet
hardly dariug to anticipate that first love would U»
omnipotent. Tho young people were kindiy rts»
freshed at tho school-house, tmd ere they left it,
changed the destiny of the bride, by subrtituting
her first, instead of iter late lover’s name, in tlio
proclamation lines for tlio following-day. After
an hour's rest, and Eupa had been comfortably
wrapped up by her friends, the travellers Again
set out on foot for a walk of several miles over a
moorland bill, so that it .- as considerably past mid
night when tho returned sailor stood, with his
dearly-wotsbridq, at bis father’s door.
What n welcome the runaway pair received, the
affectionate, hospitable hearts that sit by many an
humble Shetland hearth, could better imagine than
we describe. Ere the sailor sought the rest he so
much needed, ho fold tho story of his wanderings
abroad, mid satisfactorily accounted for his friends
not bnvit;g received any communications from him
intimating, moreover, that, having won iu foreign
service both honor and gains, he meant to devoto
his earning and bis life to bis beloved Euga, whoox
be lmd so nearly lost. Euga blushed and
emileJ, as a liappy bride ought.
While our Shetland Locbinvar wns thus gallant
ly bearing uft’the prize, to which, indeed, he wus
but justly entitled, what look place at the house
she had precipitately left? It was not long, of
course, ere bride was trussed; but believing that
some of the young men present had collected tq
hide her from tier careless maidens, according to.
old established spurt on similar occasions, her fe
male friends liegnn jestingly to seek her in every
lifiely and unlikely place. The jest, ere long,,
grew sad earnest—
“They sought her that night.
And they sought her uext day.”
Bnt her mother calling to mind her poor girl’s
pule, saddened aspect, admitted only the horror^
inspiring idea that she must have vclnntardy hid
den her Borrows in the deep sen nnd under tiiiq
impression would uot be withdrawn from tlio-
neighboring cliff, expecting there to llnJ at leqsr
the floating corpse of her they so despairingly
sought.
This distraction lasted till some neishbors re- ■
tnrned from the distant parish church the'ensuing
day, when, to thcirunulteratileand joyful surprise,
they were informed that Willie Sutherland, and.
Enga were proclaimed three times, according- fip
common usage, aud no objections having beeu of
fered, were seen after service to approach the ses-
sion-liouqe with one or two friends, where, it waq-
understood, tjjey yvero lawfully joined in pmj-riaga
by the minister.
Tbe quondam “craven bridegroom” had been
least afi'ected of the party by all that bad passed.
Perhaps lie was conscious be was about to liava.
received, a cold, reluctant hand. However that
might be, liis philosophy, when informed of thp
facts of the Case, deserves to bo recorded, for the
benefit ofal((we trust they are but few) who may
be called to suffer in similar circumstances iifonj

“Lether be going," said bridegroom Jock; "they’ro

Prospects ot EToridn,
At no previous time has there been so much !»>

tho view—turn in whatever direction wo may.—
Tbe accounts which reach us from onr sistep
Southern States assure us that no where else has.

of them tbe products is supposed to have dimiu:-

one forth, here v,-e have reason, to believe that-
there has beeu made, what would fie ppngifforPw
through the cotton growing region, » full average
crop. ^ Willi such a product, sold, as ;t js now acjfi
ing, at ten ceula per pound, unr planters have pYj
cry reason for satisfaction aud thankfulness. EE
But gratifying as are the rewards of the labor of
tbe cottou planter, they sink in consequence when,
contrasted* with the more lucrative gains oi our
Tobacco growers. Our neighbors iu the populous,,
intelligent, and wealthy County of Gadsden, nnty.
well read with sublime indifference tbe most glow
ing and glittering accounts of California gotd.—
Realizing, ps \yo are positively informed many of
them have tbe present year, five or six hundred
dollars per hand, they may well be content to stay,
at home.
As tidings of the supeeqs of the Florida Co Uot;
and Tobacco planters go abroad, ibere is reason tq
believe that such an impetus will be given to itj;-
migratiou from lena furorgd pprtiqns pi tin’ South,

Nor is this oil. As wo have already shown in 3>

the expectations and calculations oftlie most san
