Tbe following is an extract [com the report:
“The directors have much pleasure iu reporting
that the contractors on the luuuel are proceeding
with it with all the seentiug'aud regularity of the
simplest earth section ou the road, aud will tiuisU
it quite as soon as the earliest day it can be reach
ed, with iron from either end of tho road.
“Itisknowu to mostof our stockholder* that
this tuuuel is near half a mile long, entirely though
solid rock, aud that the approaches to it make
nearly another half mile of cuts through tbe same
material. Some parts of these cots are fifty Icel
deep, and some more. These, with tbe immense
cuts aud fills asceiidiug aud descending the moun
tain bluffs, through rock, make this pass the first
through the Cumberland mountains, a work of
great magnitude, aud ono that has hitherto deter
red eveu tho most enterprising. To facilitate the
construction ol this tunnel, three shafts have been
sunk eleven feet long by seven wide, to an average
depth of one hundred aud seventy feet each, also
through a solid rock. Two of these shatu are
down to the heading, aud ono of them into the
tuuuel, with hands ut work euch way from it, and
the third is within a few feet of being down.
“Three sets of bands are eugaged on this shaft,
working eight hour spells, day and night, aud the
balance of this work has two sets of hands work
ing day and night. This work is uow nearly all
under cover, where tbe weaiber has no efiecl up
on operations of tbe workmen, thus enabling ns to
calculate with reasonable certuiuty as to its com
pletion. • ..
“The Directors expect to commence laying down
iron on tbe end of the road at Nashville, early in
the uext summer, and, if they can make such ar-
r mgemants with the Southern stockholders as will
warrant them, they hope the end of tbe road next
to Chattanooga, all andcr contract early iu the
next spring. This they hope will enable them to
commence laying down iron at tbut end of tbe
road by the end of the next year at furthest; and
thus, by coming from each end to the centre, com
plete the work at an early day. If successful iu
effecting this arrangement iu the South, your Di
rectors entertain a hope that they may be untir
ing energy and management, complete this entire
work by the close of 1851.
“If these expectations shall be sustained, they
will have accomplished what no community has
done in this country within the same time, and
''considering the difficulties to be surmounted, with
equal means. Tbe Bead and Branch are one huu
dred uud fifty nine miles lung. The Rond crosses
all (he ranges usually fcuown as the Cumberland
Mountains, and the Tennessee river, with a Bridge
sixty feet high, and near a half mile long.
“If this all eon be accomplished, this work will
he finished for near $700,000 less thau the original
estimates, and iu less time thau was ever promis
ed. Tbisis saying much for our eugiuoers, con

done their duty with fidelity; the contractors have
generally been faithful, aud tbe stockholders have

weeks with a most paiuful aud violent cough, notwith-s

finding much relief I sent otfin haste fory our Anodine

Our readers must have noticed before now, that
tbe tone of retuaik aud feeling with which clan
destine marriages are couitueuted upon iu convor-
suiiuu, and by the press generally, is one of levity
aud undisguised satisfaction. It is commonly re
garded as oueol I he best of jokes, ifafoolisb daugt-
ter ol fifteen or sixteen years of age succeeds iu
out writing lather and mother, and ruuaotl with a
comparative stranger. Editorial wit is taxed to
its extremest capability to render ridiculous tbe
distress uud auxiety ofthe bereaved father, as he
follows his wutideriug child. And if fortune fa)
vors the runaways, null tbe knot is tied before the
parent can interpose a warning word, the general
joy is rapturous. It is a triumph of young love
over stem, uusympalbisiug, tyrannical household
authority, which calls for the merriest celebra
tion. Or if the idea should occur to any, that all
is not quite right in such cavalier treatment of
parents, it is soon apologised for by the sage ob
servation that young folks will be young folks.
Take it all, iu all, u strauger to our maimers aud
customs would he likely to infer that parental rule
aud counsel implied something very dreadful aud
oppressive, and that the youug ladies of tbe laud
were held iu a home bondage of the most nujust
uud ungenerous character.
At the risk of being regarded as very old-fash
ioned, we shall nevertheless acknowledge that we
rarely can see any thing of the nature of a good
joke in a c-laudeotiue or runway wedding. IVe
coulees to a feeling of saduess and evil forebuld-
ing. w hen we hear that a girl who is a mere child
ha. made up her rniud to repudiate the love and
ai.xious cureol'lbe mother who lore her, und ot the
father who baa cherished her as his life—that she
baa turned her face awuy from tbe altar of home,
from the nest of her iufaucy, aud putjiu-sclfiuto the
ban Is ot a man whom her pareuls dare not trust.
We need hardly remark that marriage is the
great event iu wuinuu’s life from which all other
events lake their coloring. If she err here, her
v\ bole life is one of uuavailiug penance, ol scald
ing tears of sharpe aud blighting sorrow. She
cauuut go back uud undo her fault; she dareuot
look to th« i llure, for it is all desolate to her.—
These things being so, it follows that a youug
lady should yield her hand aud heart only after
the must prudent aud cautious forethought. She
should avail herself of the wisdom aud experience
of those who love her, and above all, of ber par
ents, aud alter all, she will feel that the cltauce*
are sufficiently numerous that she may still make
uu unwise choice.
But iu most clandestine marriages tbe gfei (a
child, iguuiaut of the world; without expenmee;
deficient iu judgmeui; her mind probably tilled
with false notions and fanciful day-dreams, deriv
ed from novelists und ruinuuceB. She meets with
a youug man at a party, or a ball, or, tie matter
where who seems interested iu her, aud she is
flattered by Lis apparent admiration. He con

hi* cull, aud they are henceforth iu love, il they
» ore not at tbe first glauce. They have become
the Romeo aud Juliet of what is a play iu the out
set, but a tragedy iu its close.
The iucompeteuce of the youug girl to estimate
the character of her lover is perfectly apparent to
every one hut herself. It is enough for her that
he appears to love her biucerely aud ardently. He
at hen- ty of char-'

staled upon his own kuowjedgo flShy fiartliM
upon implicitly. We do Dot know wfaetLcr all thu
great results which be anticipates from thu inven
tion which he describe*, can be realized} hut he
has stated to us some remarkable facts, the results
of bis own experiments, which would seem tu
justify the anticipations in which be indulges. If
the inveution shall turn oat to be what tho iuvcu)
tors now promise themselves it will he, it is cer
tainly a most wonderful discovery, aud will create
a new era in the arts mid in civilization :
Messrs. Editors: I am authorized to announce
the discovery and practical teal of the most im
portant scientific invention ever yet produced or
brought to light since the world bas been inhabit
ed by men; in invention which mast eventually,
and almost immediately, produce uu immense- re
volution iu tbo commercial intercourse and busi
ness iu geueral throughout the world; aud, al
though it will break down aud ruin mauy of tbs
most important branches of business and avenue*
of wealth, with hundred* of wealthy corporation*
and busiuess establishments, yet it will build up
thousands of others, and contribute hundreds of
millions to tbe benefit of mankind, especially to
tbe American community.
Tbo first aud main feature, and foundation cf Ibis'
invention, and which utonce opens a field for hun)
dreds of other inventions, is the discovery by
Henry M. l’aiue, esq. of a ready and almost ex-
penseiess mode of decomposing water and reduc-'
ing it to tbe gaseous state. By the simple opera
tion of a very small machine, without galvanic
batteries,-or the consumption of uietuls or acids;
and only the application ot less than one throo-
hundreth fl-SQU) part of one horse power, Mr.
Paiue produces 2U0 cubic feel oi hydrogen gus, and
100 feet of oxygen gasper hoar. This quantity
of these gases, (tho actual cost of which isles*
tbau one cent) will furnish as much beat by com
bustion as 2.000 feet of the ordiuary coal gas, aud
sufficient to supply light equal to three hundred
common lumps for teu hours; or to warm an ordi
uary dwelling house twelve huurs; including tho
requisite beat for the kitchen; or to supply the re
quisite heal for one horse power of steam.' This
iuveutiou has been tested by six mouths’ opera
tion, applied to the lighting of houses, and' recent
ly the applicability ol these gases to tbe warming
of bouses bas also beeu tested with perfectly satis
factory results. A steam engiue furnace and a
parlor stove, both adapted to the burning of tbcsO
gases, have been invented, and measures taken for
securing patents tDerefor.
Mr. Paine 1ms one of his machines, new and elo-
gant, now iu full operation and publicly exhibited,
and may be expected to exhibit tbe same in this
city wilbitft wenty day*. Theouly actual expense
of warmiug houses by this apparatus is that ut
winding up a weight (like tbe winding up oia
clock) once a day; aud the heat produced may be
aa easily graduated and regulated as the fiame of
a common gas burner. No smoke whatever is
produced, but a very small quantity of steam saffi*
cieut to supply the requisite moisture to tbe at
mosphere. Iu its application to tbeprudnetion of
steam power, it will reduce the expense thereof
t j the mere wear of the machinery, aud will imm*)
diately produce an immense demand for steam en
gines aud iuduce tbe establishment of thousands of
manufacturing mills, reduce the expense of travel
ing aud increase the demand for agricultural pro
duce, while its ruins the coal and gas busiuess, and

have hitherto existed to serial paVigilioa—the
difficulty of procuring hydrogen gas, uud carrying
a supply of fuel; aud it may uow be considered a
matter of tolerable certainty that men will be
seen swiftly and safely soaring in various direc

being of immense importance, should out be longer
withheld, aud 1 therefore would avail tnyself of
your widely circulating journal to present them
to the public.

The South American Forests;
Tbe forests cf the Amazons not only cover the
basin of that river, from tbe Cordillera ot Chiqui-
tos tu the tnouutaiua of I'arimn, but also its limit
ing mounlaiu chains, the Sierr i-Dos Vertentes and
l’nrima, so that tbe whole forms nil area of wood-
land more than six times tile size of France, lying
between tbe eighteenth parallel of south latitude
and tbe seventh of north; consequently, intertropi-
cnl and traversed by tbe equator. According to
Baron Humboldt, tbe soil, enriched forages by tlio
spoils of the forest, consists ofthe richest mind.—
The heat is suflbeatiue iu tbe deep and dark re
cesses oftbese primeval woods, where not a breath
of uir peuetrntes, and where, after being drench
ed by tbe periodical rams, the dump i,-. .->> excessive
that a blue mist rises iu tba early tnnruiug amuug
the huge sterna of the trees, and envelopes the eu-
taugled creepers stretching from bough to bough.
Adeatb-like stillness prevails from suurise to suns
set; theu the thousands of ntiimals that inhabit
these forests join in one loud discordant rofir, un.l
continous. but in bursts. The beasts seem tube
periodically and unanimously roused by some un
known impulse, till tbe forest rings in uuiversalup^
roar. Profound silence prevail! at midnight,
which is broken at the dawn of morning by anoth
er general roar of tho wild chorus. The whole
forest often resounds wbeu tbe animals, startled
from their sleep, scream in terrorut tbe noise maud
by bands of it* iuhabilauts (lying from some night
prowling foe. Tbeir anxiety and- terror before a
thunder-storm are excessive, uud all nature seem*
to partake in the dread. The tops of thu lofty
trees rustle ominously though not a breath of air
agitate* them; a hollow whistling in tbe high re
gions of the atmosphere come* as a warning from
tbo black floating vapor; midnight darkness en
velope* the ancient forests, wlurh soon after
groan and craek with the blast of tho hurricane.— 1
The gloom it rendered still more hideous by the
vivid lightning aud the stnuniug crash of thunder.
