Love and Hope,
nr j s. wiuox.
There was a time when Love and Hope
Bang sweetly io my ear,
A silvery tale of happiness
la manhood'* future year.
Love whispered tales of an angel)
Whose smiles were always gay.
And at whose voice the darkest hours
And sorrow fled awsy. '
Upon whose knees a little sylph,
(Her image.) oft would play,
And when a tear bedimmed its eye,
Shu kissed that tear away.
And when the sober one wonld cornu
Around the social hearth.
Tho angel aud the aylph wonld tarn
Its soberness to mirth.
Bat Hope, the svreen song of wealth,
Of marble hall and gems;
And chairs of State, with honored names,
And princely diadems 1
Of stately castles—wide domains,
And vassals st command.
Ami all the yearning heart could wish
At Fortnue's partial hand.
Tho dreamy hooraof youth are past,
And with them Love has flown:
Tho angel and the aylpb are gone,
And 1 am left alone ;
And all the castles Hope had built.
Long aluce have passed away—
Ftc watched them tailing one by one.
Like loavos ia Autumn's day.
•Aye. Hope has gone, and grim Despair
Carnes stealing o'er me now,
And heavily aclond of care,
Is settling on my brow.
Now, *h how dark the future hangs,
Above my pathway drear.
Since Love'hrs proved a ph.-mtom dream.
