Reminiscences of Albert Gallatin.
We extract the fdlowing from a paper entitled
* Reminiscences of Albert Gallatin,'' recently read
before the Now York Historical Society, and pub
lished in the Literary Wn.-ld.

rived in Maine in 1780, be found the people of New
England, generally, well acquainted with -English
and European affairs; but spoke of Virginia as a
country far distnul and little known. 'When he went
tv Congress in 1793. from Pennsylvania, ho had visited
most of the States, had made himself familiar with
their several histories, and was tolerably acquainted
with the peculiarities of each. The other members,
however, bad travelled bat little, amt their hnowledcc
of tb* country was confined to their own States. He
found, therefore, to Ilia surprise, that ha was better
acquainted with the United States than any other
mo-nber ol Coagross.

—Wbta Mr. Gallatin was a member of Congress, iu
the year 1796, Tennessee was admitted as a State
into thci Uninn, and sent her first member to Wash
ington. Oneday, when in hiaaeat in the House. Mr.
Gallatin noticed a tall, lauk, uncouth looking iudi-
\ ideal, with long locks of hair banging over his brows
and fac-.\ while a queue bung down his back tied in
an eelahio. The dress of this individual was singu
lar ; his manner and deportment that ol a backwoods
man. The appearance of so singular a character on
the floor of the Home of Representatives, naturally
attrarted attention, and a member at his side ashed
who ha was ! Mr. Gallatin replied that it was the
Member for tho new State. " Well,” said bis friend.

The site ul ibe contemplated towu is iu Maconcoun-
r, about two miles above Traveller's Rest, upon high,

The plan of the town willioou be litliographed and
nopiea distributed iu the principal towns aud cities of
ibe state, for inspection by those who may wish to
purchase lots. An act ol incorporation under the
name of the towu of Oglethorpe, will be applied for
nt the approaching Session of the Legislature. It is
now certain that the It ailrcsd will be completed to
that point in time fur the crop of 1850. The grading is
progressing rapidly, aud the iron for the Road as far
»s Oglethorpe is contracted for, to be delivered iu
Savannah next January.

tivation thousands of acres of land now Iv iug idle,
and that tbo quantity of cotton produced there wifi
be greatly increased'

Academy for £850,
T HIS institution wifi be under the superinten
dence of Mc-Kellam and Indy, both of whom are
Collegiate graduates, experienced teachers of good
Georgiafamilies, aud teach not oa if it was an irksome
tank and one of neccstity.hut from the native fondness
they have in imparting instruction, and iniraiuiugthe
youthful mind in its laborious search after knowledge.
Mr. K. besides teaching tbo various branches of an
academic coarse, will instruct nil those who may de
sire it, in civil and municipal Law. for which he ii
well prepared, as he owus a fine library and has been
by profession alawyer.
Mrs. K. w ill take charge of the Female Department,
which will be separate from the Male, and likewise
will be assisted by her husband, (the principal.) She
is an excellent Mosiciun and admirable performer on
the Piano Forte, and has a peculiar faculty of impart
iug her musical knowledge to otheri.
Mr. K. baa succeeded in obtaining assistance of Dr.
Powers, sons to have the various branches of Medi
cine thoroughly taught Dr. P's shop will be situated
near the Academy, aud will be furnished with the
necessaiy apparatus for teaching, besides a good
library. Dr. P. will require those placed under liis
care, to recite daily to himself, and will weekly deliv
er a lecture to them.
Mr. R. desigus locntingpermanently near the Acad
emy, whicb is situated in the 7tli district Coweta
county, on a high healthy ridge, far removed from the
hustle of a village life. The inducement* held out
here to studying, wo think cannot be surpassed, either
for the healttifulness of the locality .cheapness of hoard
or tuition, for the moral and religious community, be
sides there is not a Grocery in the district, and not a
family immediately iu the neighborhood, who are not
professors of religion.
The Academy will bo fnroialied with a full chemi
cal, astronomical aad philosophies! apparatus, and a
large collection of charts and maps, explanitory of the
same, for which the apparatus is intended.
That the students of this institution may attend re
ligious worship.* chapel will bo built near the Acad
emy, in whieli there will he every Sabbath religious
services, eithcrof the Baptist, Methodist or Presby
terian. And Board ran be obtained with the princi
pal and in good families near the Academy.
The scholastic year of this institution wifi com
mence on the till Monday in January next, at which
time it is desirable for parents to send tbeir children
so as to commence their studies at the beginning of
the session, neccssvcry convenient from Macon and
