The structure which we have thus described, witli
Its two stories, standing on a star, is designed as a
grat.-l pedestal for the support of the equestrian
group whirli crowns tbe monument This group re
presents Washington on horseback. The point of
time choseu by tbe artist is just previons to a battle,
and while tbe American chief is addressing hia army.
His right ann ia railed and extended, not in the art
ef summand, hot at though he were calmly aud ener
getically pleading before bis sol her* tlie importance
of doing their daty to their country. With his left
hau l, he holds the bridle of the horse, whose move-
aasat is spirited, but subdued so as not to command
loo tnach the attention of the observer. The costume
of Washington ia preserved entire; this bring iu har
mony with the ataluus surrounding the lower part ot
tlie structure.
If this monument should be executed according tn
the designs of the artist, the statues at the hate would
he nine leet in height, and the group of Washington,
on horseback, fifteen feet. The entire height of the
monument would be between fifty nnd sixty feet, and
its diameter at tbe platform fifty feet. The gtatoary
it ell to be of bronxe, of a rich color. Gidding is tn be

Grand and unequalled Preparation
is mnnuf&ctured on the Urgest scale, and is called for
throughout the length nnd breadth of the land, especially as
It is found incapable of degeneration nr deterioration.
Unlike yoang S. P. Townsend’s, it improves with age, and
never changes, but for tbe better; because it is prepared on
scientificprinciples by a scientific man. The highest knowl
edge of Chemistry and the latest discoveries of the art,
have all been brought into requisition in tho manufacture
of the Old I)r*s Sarsaparilla. The Sarsaparilla root, it is
well known to medical men. contains many medicinal pro
perties, and some properties which arc inert or useless, and
other*, which if retained in preparing it for use, produce
fermentation and acid, which is Injurions to tho system.
Some of tho properties of Sarsaparilla are so volatile, that
they entirely evaporate and are lost in the preparation, if
they ore not preserved by a scientific process, known only to
those experienced in its man ufacture. Moreover, these
volatile principles t which fly ofT in vapor, or ms an exhala
tion, under heat, are (he very essential medical properties o
the root, which give install its value.
Any person can boil or stew the root till they get a dark
colored liquid, which is more from the coloring matter in
the root than from any thing else; they can then strain
this insipid nr vnpid liquid, sweeten with S4>ur molasses,
nnd then call If SARSAPARILLA EXTRACT or SYRUP.”
Rut such H not the article known a< the
GENUINE OLD DR. JACOB TOWNSEND’S
SARSARPARILLA.
This is so propared. that all the iuert properties of the
Snrssparilla root .are first removed, everything capable of
becoming acid, or of fermentation, is extracted and rejected ;
then every particle of medical virtue is secured in a pure
anti concentrated form; and thus it i* rendered incapable
of loting any of Its valuable and healing properties. Pro
