Early Dayn of Napoleon.
«" Thiers, in his History of tho Consnlste. relates
some very strange and previously unknown particu
lars respecting the early life and penory of Napoleon
Bonaparte. It appears that after be bad obtained a
snbaltern’s commission ia tho French service, and af
ter he had done the State gnod serriee hy hia skilland
daring at Tonlon. he lived for some time in obscure
lodginn and in anrh extreme poverty that he was of
ten without the means of paying ten son* (2.) for his
diener.and freqnently.went without any meal at all.He
was under th* necessity of borrowing small aumt. and
even worn-ontcloths*, from hia acquaintances! He
and hi* brother Lonia. afterward king of Holland, had
at nee timo only one coal between them.ro the brother*
roaM only go out alternately. tnn> and torn aboot. At
thisirlaii the ehiefbenefartnr of the fntnre emperor and
conqueror "at whole mighty name the world grew
pale," was the actor Talma, who often gave him food
and money. Napoleon’a face afterward ao framed for
ita clastic mould. was during this period of starvation,
harsh and angular in ita lineaments, with projecting
cheek bones. His meagre fare bronght on an nu-
plaasant and unsightly entanoon* disease, of a type
ao virulent and malignant, that it took all the all ill and
assiduity of his accomplished physieisn Corvisart,
to expell it after a duration of more than ten years.—
the squalid beggar then, the splendid Emperor after
ward—the tread bare habiliment, the imperial man
tle—the hovel and the palace—the meagre food and
tho gorgeous banquet—the friendship of a poor actor.
H10 homage and terror of the world—an exile and a
prisoner—inch are the ops and downs ofthla chance-
able life, inch the lights and ahadows of the great
and mighty.
Wedding*.
A learned writer says,in speaking of weddings, that,
"none bnt a parent feels opon an occasion liko this.—
And then the bride, gasing with filial and grateful
spirit upon the face of those coder whose parental
kiudneas alio has been fostered, tremblir g at the mag-
nitnde and irrevocability of the step aho ha* ta
ken, sod which mast give color to the whole of her
fature existence. Then tnrning her eye* upon her
new made hatband, with a glance which seemed to
say, "now I moat look for hnaband, parent, all in yoo.’
tho reciprocal glance to assure her; she drinks in
confidence and reliance aa her eye bend beneath hia

pation gets the better of reflection. The future for

heart of the man wham she baa confided her happi

DK. DE GRAFFEXRIED S CELEBRATED
RHEUMATIC LINIMENT.
I N introducing this medicine to tho people of tbe
United States, ioraale, the proprietors beg leave
to submit tbe following statement of Dr. DeGraffen-
ried, ita discoverer aud inventor.
The undersigned Iraukly states that ho has prescri
bed this medicine for the last twenty-two years, in all
formsbf Acute and Chronic Rheumatism, with-a suc
cess unparalleled in the annals of medicine; and he
has nu hesitation in saying, that it is decidedly the
mott valuable remedy ever yet discovered for the re
lief of this most paioluland distressing malady.
His note book contains upwards of three hundred
cases, in which it has been used within the above
named period, and in no single instance baa it come to
bit knowledge, of its failing to effect a cure when per
severed in. Many of tlie cases were from four to ten
years standing; and what may appear more remarka
ble and extraordinary, is, that when the patient has
been once relieved, tbe disease ia permanently cured,
remains so. not a solitary instance having been re
ported to him of.its return.
AH ho would aak for this remedy ia a fair and im
partial audpatient trial, for the results ho entertains
iu> appreheiuton.
Up to the time of this discovery, tho undersigned
had well studied the origin, progress, and character
of this disease, and is well assured, had Consulted
every author on ita treatment, who had written or
been translated into the English language, and had
nsed all the remedies of any notoriety then in vogne
with the profession, with-however, very rarely any
relief to poor suffering humanity.
It has Dallied the skill and science of the most emi
nent Physicians and surgeons of our own and of every
other country. But the undersigned flatters himself
that his remedy will cure this most painful disease,
when all others have failed, and that lie shall have
been an humble instrument in the hands of God, of re
lieving the hnmati family of a vast amount of suffering.

Col. A. B. Ragau— Sir: It afford*me great pleasure
to be able to bearjestimony to the efficacy aod vir
tues of Dr- DeGraffenried’a Rheumatic Liniment.
1 have been sorely afflicted for tbe last six years
with what I believed to be and that eminent Physi
cians of this city pronounced Rheumatic gout. For
several winters psst I have been confined to my room
nnd bed nearly all the time. InJannary last I had an
attack as violent if not more so than nsnal, which pros
trated me for about three weeks; on your recommen
dation I commenced the use of this Liniment, (with !
must confess but little faith.) Ita effects were aston
ishing aud decidedly beneficial from its first applica
tion. In a few day* my back, wrist* and ancles were
eotirely relieved (and so continue) of all soreness,
pains, and the swellings reduced, with the use of less
than one bottle. I have been in the discharge of my
ordinary business ever since.
I consider it an extraordinary, and decidedly the
most efficacious remedy lor this disease which 1 have
ever met with. And most cheerfully recommend ita
use to all who may beaffleted with it.
Respectfully yoors, N. W. Bridges.

Dr. E. L.DeGraffenried—Dear sir: Agreeable to
yonr request, I give my testimonial as to the virtue of
your Liuiment in the cure of Rheumatism. Being at-
For the Removal and Permanent Cure of all
NERVOUS DISEASES.
And of those complaints whtcu are c, used by an im
paired, weakened or unhealthy condition of tbe Ner-
■vous System. ’ ,
This beautiful and convenient application of tho
mysterious powers of Galvanism and Magnetism,
has been pronounced by distinguished physicians,
both in Europe and the United States, to be the most
valuable medicinal discovery of the Age.
Dr. Christie’s Galvanic Belt and Magnetic
Fluid,
is used with tho most perfect and certain success fn
all cases of General Debility, strengthening the wea
kened body, giving tone to the various organs, and in
vigorating the entire system. Also id fits, cramp,
paralysis and palst, dyspepsia or indigestion,
RHEUMATISM, ACUTE and CHRONIC GOUT, EPILEPSY,
LUMBAGO, DEAFNESS, NERVOUS TREMORS, PALPITA
TION OF THE HEART, APOPLEXY, NEURALGIA. PAINS in
the SIDE and CHEST, LIVF.R COMPLAINT, SPINAL COM
PLAINT, and curvature ofthe ipine, hip complaint
DISEASES of the KIDNEYS, DEFICIENCY OF NERVOUS-
and physical energy, and all nervous diseases,
which complaints arise from one simple cause, viz:
A Derangement of the Nervous System.'*
|yin Nervous compaints. Drags and Medicines
increase the disease, for they woaken the vital ener
gies of the already prostrated system; while under’
the strengthening, life-giving, vitalizing influence of
Galvanism, as applied by this beantiful and wonder
ful discovery, the exhausted patient and weakened
sufferer is restored to former health, strength, elasti
city and vigor.
The great peculiarity and excellence of Dr.
Christie's Galvanic Curative*, consist, in the
fact that they arrest and care disease by outward ap
plication, in place of tbe nsnal mode of dragging and
E hysicking the patient, till exhausted nature) sinks
opelessly nnder the affliction.
They strengthen the whole system, equalize the cir
culation m
do the slightest injury under any circumstances.-
Since their introduction into tho United States, only
three years since; more than 60,000 persons inclu
ding all aces, classes and conditions, among which
were a large number of ladies, who are pecu
liarly subject to uervons complaints, have been en
tirely and permanently cured, when all hope of relief
had been given up, and every thing else had been
tried in vain!
To illustrate the uteof the Gnlrnnic Reis, sup
pose the case of a person afflicted with that bane of
civilization. Dyspepsia, or any other chronic or ner
vous disorder, in ordinary cases, stimulants are taken,
which, by their action on the nerves and mnscles of
the stomach, afford temporary relief, bnt which leave
the patient fu a lower state, and with injured faculties
afterthe action thus excited has cease'd. Now com
pare tbii-witb (be effect resulting from the application
of tbe Galvanic Belt. Take a Dyspeptic sufferer,
even in the wont symptoms of nn attack, and simply
tie the Belt around the body, using tbe Magnetic
Fluid as directed. In a short period .the insensible
versprirrtion will act on tbe positive element of the
Jelt, thereby causing a Galvanic circulation’which
will pass on to the negative, and thence back again
to tlie positive, thus keeping up a continuous Galvanic
circulation throughout the system. Thus' the most
severe cases of Dyspepsia are permanently cured. A
few days is often amply sufficient to eradicate the dis
ease of years.
Certificates and testimonials ofthe most undoubted
character, from all parts of the country could be given
sufficient to fill every column in this paper.
Dr. Clsristir's Galvanic iVccklnce is nsed for
all complaints affecting the Throat, or Head, inch as
Bronchitis, imflamation of the throat, nervous and sick
headache, dizziness of the head. Neuralgia ill tbe
face, buzzingorroaring in the ears, deafness, which
is generally nervous, and that distressed complaint,
called Tic Dolorenx.
Dr. Clsrisiic’s Galvanic Bracelets are found
of vast service in cases of convulsions or Fits, spas
modic complaints, and general nervious affections of
the hendand upperextremities. Also in Palsy and
Paralysis, and all diseases caused by a deficiency of
power or nervous energy in thelimbaor other organa
of tbe body.
{^*No trouble or inconvenience attends the use of
DR. CHRISTIE'S GALVANIC ARTICLES,
and they may be wornfiiy site moat feeble and deft,

the sensation attending their use is highly pleasant

A liberal and enlightened spin t of philanthropy will
not brand, witb the imputation ol quackery, any in

Dr. Marshall does not claim to be infallible. There
are some cases in whiob the mortal condition, from
long standing, has made snch sad encroachments up
on tbe vital organs, that nothing short of creative
power can arrest the invader and save the patient.
These cases he professes not to be able to reach. But
the writerof this article, having bad some observation
of his success, ia of opinion, that the case of failure de
not amount to one in twenty of those which he ven
tures to undertake.
His practice is becoming more generally known
throughout Georgia, and other states south and west,
and cases of disease are constantly multiplying upon
his hands.
All persons who may be afflicted ' with any of the
aforesaid diseases, are advised to make the harmless
experiment.
