gjieak Lovingly of 'Woman.
KV r. O. IKK.
gpoak lovingly of woman—
]n her do thoo confide;
See not her imperfections.
But only virtue’s aide.
She is the weaker vessel.
More liable to fall;
But man, of sterner nature,
Does he not sin at all !
Speak lovingly of woratm
The mother of oar youth—
The maiden of oor after time.
Array’ll in garb of truth :
A treasure richertban the gem
That gleams in foreign land—
More beautiful than brightest flow’rs
Produced by Nature's baud.
Speak lovingly of woman
The sharer of our wealth—
An earthly angel—who says nay 1
In sickness and in health.
When cold Misfortune oe’r os flings
His clouds to scare repose. /
Her voice is heird in sympathy—
'Tis woman's tear that flows.
Speak lovingly of of woman
Though sin may lead astray i
The streamlet that is wand’nng
Far distant on its way.
May perhaps retorn with vigor
And gladness to its rest.
While, as before, calm moonbeams
Will glimmer on its breast.
Then speak of woman lovingly.
And show thyselfa man;
Haw vigilant tall many aro
Another’s deeds to scan!
*Ti« woman In affliction cheers
With comlort from above:
'Tie she who shares our Joy and grief.
And blesses with her love!

Home.
“Rome, thy joya arc paising lovely-
joys uo stranger heart can tell ”
What a charm rest* upon the endearing name—my
home 1 consecrated by domestic love—that golden
key ol earthly happiness. Witboot this, home would
bu like a tumpleatripped of its garlands: there B la
ther welcomes, with loud affection ; a brother’s kind
sympathies comlort iu the hour of distress, ami assist
in every trial; there a pious mother first tsught the
infant Itps to lisp the umne of Jesus; and there siev
ed sister dwells, the companion ol early days.
Truly, ifthere ia aught that it lovely here below, it
is home—sweet home! It it like the oasis of the des
ert. The passing of oor days may he painful; oor
oath may be checkered with sorrow and care; un-
kindness and frown* may withor the joy-outness of
the heart, efface the happy amiles from the brow, and
bedew life’s way with tear*; yet. when the mem
ory hovers over the past, there it no place which it
delightn to linger, at the loved scenes of childhood’*
home) It is the polarstsrul existence. Wlistclieer*
t ho mariner, far away from hit’uative land in a foreign
jmrt, or tossed upon the bounding billows, as be pares
the deck at midnight alone—what thoughts fill bit
breast! He is thinkingofthe loved.me* far away at
his own happy cottage; io his mind’s eye he tee*
the ainiliug group seated around the cheerful fireside.
In imagination he hears them oniting their voices in
tinging the tweet snugs which he love*. He is anti-
cip ding tlie hour when he shall return to his native
laud, to greet tfiose absent one* so dear to the heart
Why resta that deep shade of sadness upon the
stranger's brow as he seals himself amid the family
circle! He is surrounded by all the luxuries that
wealth can afford; happy faces gather round him,
and strive in vain to win simile. Ah! beisthiuk-
ing of his own sweet home; ofthe loved ones assent
bled within hit own cheerful cot.
Why those tears which steal down the cheeks of
that young and lovely- girl, as the mingles io the so
cial circle! Ah! she it an orphan; she, too. had a
happy home; its loved ones are now sleeping in the
cold and silent tomb. The gentle mother who watch
ed over her infancy, and hushed her to sleep with a
lullyby, which a mother only can sing, who in girl
hood days taught her of the Saviour, and tamed her
youthful voice to ting praises to His name, has gone
tu the mansions nf joy above, and is mingling her
songs, and tuning her gulden harp with bright angels
in heaven. Poor one! She is now left to thread the
golden path of life, a lonely, homeless wanderer.
Thus it is in this changing world. The object*
moat dearare snatched away. We are deprived ol
the friends whom most we love, and onr cherished
home it rendered desolate. -‘Patting away,’’ is en
graved on all things earthly But there it a home
that knows nn changes, where separations never
take place, where the sorrowing ones nf this world
may obtain relief for all theirgriefs. and where the
sighs and tears of earth, are exchanged for unending
songs of joy. This home ia found in heaven.
In the shadowy pint, there it one aweet reminis
cence which the storms of life can never wither; it
la the recollection of home. In tho visioned future,
there is oua bright star whose lustre never fades.- it
is the hope of borne—of* heavenly home.—Mutual

ftated to be thought that certain persons had po-
ctiftarr faculties for curing diseases, while iu many
instances charms were used for the same purpose
Dr. Armstrong relates a curious anecdote in connec
nection with the latter superstitution. It aeems
Chief Justice Holt, an English jurist, when a young
mau, wentto a tavern in acooutiytown with some
frieuds to have a frolic, and that they did not recol
lect the fact of their having no money until they had
ran up a long score. In this dilemma. Holt was call
ed upon to get them out ofthe scrape, and observing
that the landlord’s daughter was suffering from an
ague fit, he at once collected several plauts, mixed
them with a great deal of mock ceremony, rolled
them up into a bail and tied them round the girl's
neck; scrawling first, however, grotesque letters up
on the piece of parchment in which the plants were
wrapped. Much to the surprise of the conjurer and
his friends, the ague departed, and the girl aeemed
quite well. The landlord was tngratefulfor the cure
that ha gladly made Holt a present of (he bill himself
and frieuds had run up, and oven offered to pay some-
tiling handsome. Now, tlie strangest part of the
•lory is yet to be told Some years after, when
Holt was promoted to the bench a woman was
brought before him for witchcraft, (the last ever tried
fur that nffeuce in England.) and strange as it may
•earn, she made no defence, but simply stated that
tne had effected certain cures by means of • ball,
which ahe produced. Tbit very ball proved to be
the identical one which the Judge bad made in bis
youthful day*.
Rewards of Authors,
According to the International for May. the rewards
of authors are greatest in France. InGermany, En

Ouoper. Inring and Prescott, in this couutry- have
each received for copyrights more than oue hundred
thousand dnllars. Iu England Dickens lias probably
rocoived more than any other living author—and iu
Vrauc*. Lamartine. Victor Hugo. Dumas, Scribe.
Thiers, and many others, have obtained large for
tunes by writiug.
Iu Germany. Lieffenbach received for his book on
Operative Surgery tome $3,300; and Perthes or Ham-
Burgh. paid to Neanderon a single work, more than
$30,000, exclusive iff the interest his heirs still have
in it. Poets like Uhlaiid. Preiligrath, Geibel. have
alto received at much as 88.000 or $IS.00»nnthe

Treat Paine receive $1,500 for atnng. Of oarliving
