wide awake at least. There is no mistake iu the move

all European war, prevents her from consummating
at once, all her designs. Recollect the letter of Lord
Aberdeen, in 1844, ordered to bo communicated to
our Secretary of Stale, in relation to their negotia

if slavery fell iu Texas, it would fall throughout Am

Let us keep out of it: rnd if we have any sympathy

to fear from England and France than Russia. There

A writer in tlic Boston Journal makes tlie
following curious calculations :
Thu enormous sum of ¥8o l.ooo.oooin gold has been
received at tlie Mint ill Philadelphia, from Califor
nia, from tho first discovery of the precious metal, to
December 1, 1853.
Now in order to give some idea to tho general
reader of tho immense amount of ♦204,*hk,,(M)0, 1 will
merely state that allowing eaeli silver dollar to weigh
one ounce uvoirdil|H*is, sixteen to the pound, the
weight would be 13,750,000 lbs., or 6375 tons, allow-
inggooo lbs. to tho ton. To carry this weight, it
would require 6375 wagons, containing a ten each, or
832.000. Now, suppose cadi vehicle, drawn by one
horse, to occupy a space of 85 feet, they would ex
tend in a continuous line, a fraction short of 30 miles.
Ill order to count such a vast sum of money as
I remember that I was coneigiosl to the dispose
tion of the Austrian General Marziani, who kept nit*
■luring twenty-two successive months in prison, with
out giving me a hearing. I then made a petitiou ti» j
Monsiguor Bedini, requesting liim, in his quality of
Governor, to interfere in my favor. 4 did not ask
for mercy, I ashed for justice ; that is to say, I asked
to he examined.
Mottsignor Bedini received my petition, and j
after several days, sent it hack to me, with
the following words written :
**1 am astonished that General Marxian! has not i
yet hail volt shot.”
I have not presented that document, because, un
der the impulse of rage, 1 tore it with my teeth.—
But 1 swear before God that tills is tlie pure truili, as
1 too well remember all the particulars.
These are all the proofs brought to snlistantiato
the charges, mid leave the reader to draw his own
inferences. It may be well to add, however, _ that
till* interpretation above given, of "disconscoratioii,”
(in Italian seouseeraxionej is not ill accordance witli
what is understood to be the actual ceremony of dis-
eousocratioii, which is said to consist merely of a
slight Scraping or rubbing of the hands, forehead, fte,
