We liuve impatience with Jeremy Diihllors,
particularly those of the gentlemanly class,
whose dainty hands refuse to earn tlie fowl
which their luxury loving mouths never refuse
to cat. Those damlv idlers seem to he under
the hallucination that they are too good to
xvork; that they were made for ornament
rather than for use; that their porcelain cor
porations came into the world with a large
credit in their favor. Iu other words, that the
world owes them a living, in return for their
coudesccudiug to be horn. Not ouly must
the flowers bloom; the birds sing ; the Lees
make honey, ami tlie trees hear fruit to regale
the senses of those exquisite aristocrats ; but
the whole human family must labor for their
support^ The farmer must dig the soil; the
sailor plow the aea; the mcrclmut devote
himself to trade, and the student to letters ;
all to adoru, and amuse, and feed a class of
idle swindlers, who contrive to live ou the fat
ofthe land, at the expense of the common
industry of society. They thus violate the
fiat of the Almighty—“ Thou shalt earn thy
bread by tho sweat of thy brow,” aud
contradict the injunction—“ lie that will not
work, neither shall he eat.”
As we began by saying, we have no
paticucc, no respect, for these genteel paupers,
these lazy incumbrances upon families and
society, who consume tlie bread they lmve
not tlie manhood to earn. Every mouthful
they eat, every article they wear, is a rob
bery from him who earned it. And yet these
very “Diddlcrs” will turn up their dainty
noses, in aristocratic disgust, at tho hard and
indepeudeut writers to whose labor they are
indebted for every necessary as well as luxury
of life. To dig they will uot, and to beg they
arc ashamed. Aud yet they do uot hesitate
to borrow and rob ;uid swindle their lazy way
through life. It is our honest opinion, that
for all such miserable Diddlers, prompt suicide
is far more honorable than such miserable
eleemosynary existence.—.V. I> .Mirror,

mI1E underaigued an nmv receiving in addition
they have lost that forbearance which the ac
tual experience of free institutions never fails,
more or less, to inculcate. But perhaps the
anarchy of Mexico ims been created less by
the intemperance of factious thijtp by the an
tagonism of races. The descendants of the
companions and of the victims of Cortez have
long stood, conventionally, on the same foot
ing of civil privelege, but the antecedent his
tory of the country has bequeathed to them a
very different lot. Tlie Indians anil the mix
ed races approximating to them are still miser
ably poor aud miserably iguorant; and till
the immense wealth of the country is engross
ed by the Spanish element. 1 he former con- - r> rx LBS. just received and for sale by

tively. Wo uieau the wearing of the very low
necked dresses, recently cotue iu vogue, at
balls, parties, soirees, :uid otlier sociable as
semblages, where lovely woutau ” shim"s. A
correspondent iu our Wasiiington Gossip, it
will be noticed, informs us that the innovation
lias made its mark, cvcu nt n Presidential soi
ree. Aud another correspondent,—a Phila
delphia one,—writing to the Mirror says, the
aboiniuuble fashion prevails not :douc in tuis
latitude, but a degree or so farther South.—
These fastidious ladies who adorn our balls and
parties, aud who would shrink at the idea of al
lowin'' u gentleman to place his hand upouher
waist whilo waltzing, will, nevertheless, vie
impregnable Spanish
pride. .Such a division of the population would |
make a representative government difficult j
anywhere; but in two-thirds of thfiJxmtli.anil
Central American countries, there is n special j
circumstance which immensely aggravates the |
original embarrassment. Their disorders and I
their revolutions are often attributed to the in
efficiency of their administrative system; but j
the truth is that many States have nourished, j
and have even preserved the freedom of their
institutions, with au equally imbecile execu
tive, mill equally mutinous legislature, and as
complete au absence of jioliee.
The real cause which gives so fatal a jioten-
cy to defects which might otherwise he grad-
ually amended, is the wealth of those coun
tries—wealth quite disproportioued to the en
ergy of the jiopulation, aud taking a form
which, of all others provokes the cupidity of in
testine disturbers anil foreign foes. The quan
tity of precious metal collected in the largest
Mexican cities is unsurpassed by .San Francis
co or Melbourne, and, indeed, the fabulous
prices of both these places have long been an
every-day feature of life in Mexico, lienee it
is that highway robbery becomes a steady oc
cupation with an assignable traction of the peo
ple, the available character of the spoil giving
a motive to plunder which the most efficient of
]K)licc systems would have a difficulty iu keep
ing down. Hence come the reckless conspira
cies of desperado chiefs who hope to enrich
themselves by a sweeping confiscation ; and
hence it may be tliat, in South America at
least, an international war is so often declared
on empty pretences or on none, iu the mere
hope that the invaders may be able to levy a
military contribution. Of all the States form
ed out ofthe revolted Spanish colonies, there
is but one wliicli docs not produce in profu
sion some unique and costly commodity. That
one is Chili; and Chili—the only jioor State
among the Hispauo American communities—is
the only one which has preserved an uninter
rupted tranquility.
The means by which Santa Anna proposes
to restore peace to Mexico arv coarse ainl ordi
nary enough. He is attempting to discipline
the arntv iuto efficiency, and to resuscitate its
morale by pretending alternately that it was
uot beaten at all in tliis war with the United
States, and that it was beaten through the un
exampled jicrfidity of its leaders. The first
use to which the increased military strength of
the country xvill be put will probably be the
clearance of Mexican California from the buc
caneers who have invaded it. It is important
to effect this, for the irruption of its success he
unchecked, is likely to rouse the filiibuster el
ement iu the United State's into tut activity
which all the moderation ofthe Washington
government may be unablo to suppress.—
There aretxvo sores, however, in the Mexican
State, which, if they remain open much longer,
will destroy it as surely as foreign conquest.
One is the miix’ersni brigandage which is tri
umphant at the very gates of the capital; the
other is the periodical desolation of the north
ern provinces by fierce Indian tribes from tho
skirts of the Rocky Mountains. To both of
these Santa Anna w reported to be addressing
himself, and it is quite certain that, until they
are assuaged, the form of government which
ncentrated the greatest amount of power
