the same year, the same class of persons ^ of tUu world
the *i* Southern States of Maryland, Vir-

yUhtuna, numbered only 15,500. Of these,
native paupers of the Xew England States
numbered, in round numhers, 19,000. while
tbtv' of the six Southern States amounted to

Venting the highest elements of Northern per-

ilutf to native born jiaitjiers, as com-
pircd with Mr. KemiiHly’s otfieial returns of
tint da** in the six Southern States of Mary-
Uuil, Virginia. X’ortli and South Carolina.
Otorgia and Alabama. We seleet the native
luoisrs because the foreign are an extraneous
, lenient, alforiliiig no basis for a just compari-
koi. And the same advantage will appear to
il„- Smith in the couipartive returns of tin
,i.!ioiii'. the deaf and dumb, the blind and the
ia-tne.
Why is this ? What are the causes of these
M. n ines in the melancholy returns of wretch
{dut*** in favor of the South. They may he
readily explained. The population of the
s,.uih is niaiuly agricultural—that of the Xew
Kimlaii' 1 States is chiefly occupied in imuiufae-
liuvs. The black slaves of the South, nml the
puunst of the whites have generally enough to
"ui. auil air enough for health mid wholesome
(ciililatioii. The liireil laliorers of the North
ur to a great extent crowded into close and
uuwholes, mie factories ; and on leaving their
iurk they return to still more crowded and
uvholeanme cellars ami garrets, in towns and
citi». reeking with unwholesome vajmrs. The
plain, but substantial fair, and wholesome cob*
as of the negro qnarters of a Southern tolmc-
Mur cotton plantation, are, in truth, more
uvorable to health ami longevity, than the
best's of many of our Northern working men
in towns, and cities, comparatively well to do
in the world.
