Tlie Salem Register tells the following good story of old Capt. Ward, who flourished in that municipality in days of yore: “Capt. Ward was an eccentric of the first I water, and one of his peculiarities was that he never gave the desired answer to a direct question. An amusing instance of this eva juve habit is related. One morning, four of I tw trienaj, who were aware of trait io his character* observed the captain going to n.nrKet. aii i ftcr ipnie bantprin^, entered into a liet as tothe practicability oflearning from him the price he paid for his purchase. They accordingly settled the preliminaries, and sta tioning themselves at different points along Essex street, which be most pass on his way * w “ ted k* 3 coming. Very soon the bluff o.d gentleman made his appearance with I a bunch of pigeons in his hand. As be ap proached, the first questioner accosted him with: “Goodmorning, captain! What did yon give for yonr pigeons, this morning?” "Monty,” said the captain bluntly, asbemov- ad up the street. The second gentleman, a little farther on, addressed him and asked: “ How go pigeons this morning, captain T” “ They don't go at alt: 1 carry ’em /* was the equally unsatisfactory reply. Shortly af ter he met the third, who passed the time of day and inquired: “How much are pigeons a dozen, captain ?”—"Didn’t get a doze*—only bought half-a-dozen !” said the old gentleman, gruifiy, still plodding on his way. Finally, the fourth and last of the conspirators cotton ed to the wary old salt by observing, in the blandest of tones: •• A fine lot of pigeons yon have there, captain! what did you get them for ?” “ To tat,” waa the pertinent and em phatic rejoinder, and the captain readied home without further molestation. If the pigeons did not take wings, the joke did, and has been handed down by tradition to the present day. Impudence. What impudent questions are these? How should an editor know ? Whoa s Udy gets stalled in a gutter. That runs in a populous street, {Lika a tty that is stranded in batter,) And has to uncover her feet, A| gently the calico lifts she, And gives it graceful sweep. Is a “feller” to blame when he chances To give her ankles a peep ? Jast to see if they're thick or they're thin, Hr. Editor, is it a sin ? Or. when a plump bosom's uncovered With delicate Houiton lace. Whose whiteness, like fall blooming jUie«, Contests with tberoee on the face, Like artificial fiowero, in dour. (If I may be allowed so to speak.) Should a feller be chucked tf he's canons Within the lace meshea to peep! Jast to jadge of the contents within— Mr. Editor, is it a sin ? Good News. No poverty there! Millions of good men have left the earth poor: but net sr has one entered Heaven poor. Lazarus, the moment before he died, was abeggar at the gate, bat in a moment after his death his estate had grown so fast that the hanghty worldliness. still surviving in all his influence, in compari son with him, was a penniless pauper. O, poor believer ? rejoice in prospect of yonr grand in heritance ! It is incorruptible, ondefiied, and fadeth not away. It is really immense, inesti mable, unspeakable. Has it not been yonr endeavor to “lay up (for yourself) treasures ia Heaven.” Why not oftener think of resalts there ? Fear not, there is “good news” from that “far off country.” Unsncessfnl as yon may have seemed on earth, yonr Heavenly schemes have all prospered. The treasury of God overflows with your wealth. Audit is safe—perfectly safe. Neith er “moth nor rust” corrupts it; nor can “thieves” break through to steal it. More over it shall increase. As long as you live on earth, yon may add to the principal, and its interest will multiply, beyond all computa tion, to all eternity. Cries as was rich, Solo mon was rich; but the humblest heir of God is richer far than all. It may be that the stores that yon have already accumulated in Heaven would boy this town, buy the district, buy our country, bay the world, and still be comparatively untouched. Nay, think not this extravagant! I would not barter the heritage of the most destitute of Christians for the whole globe and ali its improvements. Lift up yonr heart; let it expand, and fill and overflow with bliss. At the eloscnf the short joarney through time, you will see eternity open before yon, all radiant with the variety of yonr boundless and endless possessions. Be not proud, indeed—alas, for the folly of all pride ! bat be grateful, thankful, hopeful, and happy*—Stockton'* Sermon*. Jast so. A- bont three hundred thousand dollars of gold and silver are stamped daily. As the Secre tary of the Treasury has manifested a com mendable dispesiton in this crisis, to adopt any useful and practical proposition within his dis cretion. we woold suggest the expediency of increasing the coinage of gold dollars, and re ducing the number of $20 and $10 gold pieces. The latter are more readily handled and coant ed at the sub-treasary, bat the additional la bor ought not to be regarded in comparison with the public convenience. All the small denominations of gold and silver will be in re quisition over the country, and cannot be too abnadatly supplied.
