Chinese Fire Arms.
The sloop-of-war “Levant,” lately from the
Chinn Seas, is being placed in ordiuary, at the
Charlestown Ndpy Yard. The Hoston Herald
uys—
•• Among the curiosities she brought home,
way be noted a Chinese blunderbuss, Chiuese
rockets, aud a piece of an immense brass guu
Tillich was captured from tho fort at Canton
1 will give you a description of these most im
, wr tant articles, which are deposited in the
\gval Lyceum at this place. The blunder
imss measures about nine feet in length
weighs about fifty pounds, and carries a pound
ball. One would suppose this formidable
weapon could uot be handled by one man.—
Wither can it be; it takes three. One China
mW is stationed at the stock to superintend
tin' aiming and the firing, for it does not work
••a In percussion,” but is touched off “a la
tmnk,” and it is sustained upon the shoulders
,‘,f two others, who bend or straighten when the
order is given to rise or lower. By thismethod a
mngli aim is acquired. Suddenly a report is
beard, then theleaden messenger hisses towards
its place of destination. But “Ob, whereare the
two Chinamen who support this gun ?” “ Go
the dust!” Sure enough, there they are,
list upon their backs. The “ supporters” are
aiwavs aware of the result of firing these bus-
M-s. If the shot tells, they recover their con-
,i-iousnc*s with good grace, and are ready for
a new shock. These guns always kick, and
the Chinamen arc always aware of being
•• knocked into the middle of next week.”—
The new rockets,” as they are called there, are
formed ns follows—At the end of a bamboo
ciiuc of about seven feet long is placed a cop
per tube shaped like the top of a common
rocket; at the other end it is feathered like
au arrow. From the top of the copper tube is
placed a speartop, which heats as the weapon
tlios towards its victim.
The Chinamen are very skilful in sending
these “ tire-devils,” striking with precision at
;>IKI yards distant. An officer from the Le
vant gives me the following account of these
missives: Said he, “ When we were march
ing through Canton, these rockets were fly
ing about our heads os*thick as hail stones.
At lirst, not knowing what they were, we took
u > notice of them, till suddenly one of our
men gave an agonizing scream, and fell to the
ground. A rocket had pierced bis leg. We
called the surgeon, who was obliged to cut it
mt. The lance being red hot, caused an odor
to issue from the poor fellow’s leg similar to
that of a fresli beef steak. The order to
"dodge” was then given. The brass gun,
from which the piece was taken, was captured
hv American forces. It was twenty-two feet
long, and carried a <!2 pound ball. It was val
ued at #15,000. It was the wish of the Ame
rican officers to carry it home, hut Commodore
Armstrong ordered it to be bursted. After
several attempts, the monster was laid open
as you would an oyster.
The Great Stnubarg Clock.
‘•The priests aud military, have retired, and
1 am now sitting in a chair facing the gigantic
dock—from the bottom to the top not less than
100 feet and about R0 feet wide and 15 deep
Around me arc many strangers waiting to sec
tho working of this clock as it strikes the hour
of noon. Kvery eye is upon the clock. It
uor wants live minutes of twelve. The clock
has struck, aud the people are gone, except a
few whom the sexton or head man, with a
wand mid sword, is conducting round the build
ing. The clock has struck iu this way : The
dial is some “0 feet from the floor, on each
ride of which is a cherub, or little hoy, with
msll 't, unit over the dial is a small bell; the
cherub on the left strikes the first quarter, that
011 the right the second quarter. Some fifty
feet over the dial, iu a large niche, is a huge
figuic of Time, a bell in his left, a scythe in
his right hand. In front stands a figure of a
young man with a mullet, who strikes the third
•faarier, on the bell in the hand of Time, uud
then turns and glides, with a slow step, round
heiimd Times, then comes out an old man with a
Mallet, and places himself in front of him.
“As the hour of twelve comes, the old man
raise* his mallet, and deliberately strikes
twelve times on the bell, that echoes through
Ihe building, and is heard all round tho region
°f the church. The old man glides slowly be
hind Father T ime, and the young man comes
<* readily to perform his part, as the time
comes round again. Soon as the old man has
‘truck twelve and dissapeared, another set of
Machinery is put iu motion some twenty feet
higher still. It is thus : there is a high cross,
*ith the image of Christ on it. The instant
twelve is struck, one of the apostles walks out
from behind, comes in front, turns, facing the
cross, bows, and walks on around to his place.
A* he does so, another comes out in front,
lurus, bows, and passes in. So twelve apos-
tips, figures as large as life, walk round, bow,
•Mil pass on. As the last appears, an enorm-
••u« cock, perched on the pinnacle of the clock
dowly daps its wings, stretches forth its neck
crows three times, so load as to be heard
"Utside the church to some distance, and so
Mtlurally ns to be mistaken for a real cock,
fi'tn all is silent as death. No wonder this
d"ck is the admiration of Europe. It was
®*dc in 1571 and has performed these nie-
‘-suicsl wonders ever since, except about fifty
I cars, when it stood out of repair.”
. Hiuii Live 0 New York.—The following
dent is from what the Tribune recalls the
i’otipbar Papers:”
. “ A grand party was given a few nights
'Me by a wealthy citizen, at which the pecu-
•wgraces of the fashionable young men of N.
* ®rk shone with unusual splendor. In an up
per room, where card tables had been set for
l ’W gentlemen, was a large bowl of punch,
w| ‘icli • the boys’ smelt out. They broke into
'i'll room and got roaring drunk on the punch;
****** invaded the hat room and cut up all the
“wii’s hats, except their own, boring holes in
slashing others, slicing off the brims and
leaching out the crowns, until the floor was
“Wered with ruined castors; and finally
'wind op their gentlemanly behaviour by cut-
'“o the cord ot the duinb-water and letting
“■ whole of the expensive supper crockery
go into the kitchen, smashing it into countless
Pieces.”
Sadlt Unfortiwatk.—Xeal, in his “Char
coal Sketches,” describes a character who
speaks of himself somewhat as follows :
‘•To my notion, this’ere is a hard case. If
I tries to mosey along through the world with
out saym’ nothin’ to nobody, it wont do, livin'
wont come of itself, like the man you owe the
money to—you are obligated to step and fetch
it. _ If I come fur to go fur to paddle my tub
quietly down the gutter of life without bump
in’ agin the curb-stone on one side, I’m sure
to get aground on the other, or to he upsot
somehow. If I tries little speculations, such
as boning things, I’m sartin to be cotched ;
and if I goes pardners, as I do with Tipps, it
won’t do—he’ll speckilatc and bust, and I’m
sure to be smashed up and sifted through.”
Brutes love Mex more than Women.
A writer iu the Atlantic Monthly puts it thus:
Kate, the other day, was asserting a wife’s
right to control her own property, and inci
dentally advocating the equality of the sexes—
a touchy point with her. I put in—
“Tell me then, Kate, why animals form
stronger attachments to men than women.—
Your dog, your parrot, and even your cat, al
ready preforme to you. How can you ac
count for it, unless you allow there is more in
us to respect aud love t”
“I account for it,” said she, with a most de
cided nod, “by afflnity. there is more affini
ty between you and the brutes.”
Cure for the Bite ot a Mail Dog.
A writer iu the National Intelligencer says,
that spirits of hartshorn is a certain remedy
for the bite of a mad dog. The wound, he
adds, should be constantly bathed with it, and
three or four doses, diluted, taken inwardly
during the day. The hartshorn decomposes,
chemically, the virus insinuated into the wound,
immediately alters aud destroys its dcleteri-
ousuess. The writer, who resided in Brazil
for some time, first tried it for the bite of a
scorpion, and fonnd that it removed pain and
inflammation almost instantly. Subsequently,
he tried it for the bite of a rattlesnake, with
similar success. At the suggestion of the
writer, an old friend and physician, he tried it
in cases of hydrophobia, and alwayswith suc
cess.

Counterfeit Wistnr’s Balsam.
We would caution tho purchasers of the Balsam
of Wild Cherry against an imitation article which
has made its appearance in many places, and which
might deceive the unwary by.its resemblance to the
geuuine bottle. Of the mixture we need not speak.
Unprincipled seoumlrels can always be fonnd ready
to counterfeit any thing, by which they enn put mon
ey in their pockets, and they are sure to choose the
most popular and well known article 011 which to
practice their villainies. It is a lamentable fact that
there are also dealers <» medicines who are willing to
lend themselves to carry oat this imposition, by s(ti
ling sneb trash, as genuine, because they can buy it
for less than half the cost of the real article. Avoid
such a man as yon would a dealer in counterfeit
money, for he is the greater scamp of the two.
They have nover dared to forge the written signa

Weed’s Patent Sell ing Machine.
The Editor of the Cleveland (Ohio) Plaiudeaicr
says: Sewing Machines are a subject of the greatest
interest in this vicinity, as they affect the labor of
every family in tho land. With n view of purchas
ing and of examining every kind, to find the best,
we spent several daya while in New York, in the min
utest inspection of all kinds now in market, nnd our
conclusions were in favor o r Weed’s Patent, as the
most reliable Machine to pat in the hands of every
one throughout the State. We purchased one of
them -ind have used it some time, andonr opinion is
more than confirmed, for it does every kind of sew-
ing on cloth or leather, does its work strong, nice
and rapidly, and has never been out of working or
der since it came into our family, and it is so simple
as seemingly impossible to get out of order or re
quire repairs more than an ordinary person can per
form. It is nicely ornamented and makes an orna
ment to tho furniture of a parlor. It is very strong
and little liable to wear out. Its operation can be
easily learned with the printed directions for a guido
and when any family has learned its nse, we are sure
they will not live without it. It uses two threads,
thus making work stronger than if done by hand
with one thread, besides making both sides of the
work just alike. Those who need a Sewing Machine
will.do well to look at this. >

H. HAZLEHUKST, Chief Engineer of tho New

DIED,
In Rutherford Ccunty, North Carolina, May the
1st, after a short illness, EFFIE. second daughter of
W. M. and -Mary McAfee, of Fort Valley, Goo., in
the 16th year of her age. Truly, death loves a shin
ing mark. Seldom have wo been called upon to re
cord the death of as lovely a maiden. A few weeks
ago, she left her homo and friends to visit her distant
relative*. But alas, the fell destroyer had marked
her for his own. Never bit our quiet little viUage
received such a shock a. when her parents received
a telegraphic dispatch, that Effie was no more.- -
Every mother left her home and went to the afflicted
parents to comfort them. Her young friend* assem
bled and took the first train to meet her remains.—
Our whole village looks sad. None knew her but to
love, none named her but to praise. But what a
consolation to her friends, to hear that she had the
kindest of attention. She died iu full hope of Hea
ven ; gave a calm and clear evidence of her willing-
new to depart, and died in peace.
“ Farewell, if our fondeat prayer,”
For other’s weal availed on high,'
Mine will not all be lost in air,
But waft thy name beyond tho sky.
T'wi re i am to !•• weep, to sigh.
