RIVER—RICHNESS OK THE MINES.
When the last Calfomia steamer arrived it
was estimated that 3,000 people bad started
for Frazer river. Now wc are informed by the
California papers, that since the breaking out
of the Frazer river fever nine thousand two
hundred and sixteen registered passengersbave
left Sah Francisco alone, in steamers and sail
ing vessels, for the new mines. It will not he
too much to estimate that at least three thous
and more have gone whose names were not reg
istered, as every vessel, whether steamer or
sailing craft, took a great many more than the
law allows. Besides these, there has been quite
an extensive overland emigration. Altogeth

Bishop Barry.
Bishop Barry (Catholic) of Savannah, Geor

on Sabbath afternoon last. We were much
edified by his discourse, which teemed with the
spirit of true piety, and were sorry when his
last words fell upon our ears. “To love God

is too often the case that the simplicity of tho

A witty dentist, having labored in vain to

A great tnauy people are fond of books, as
they are of furniture; to dress and set off their
rooms, more than to adorn and enrich their
minds.
A Problem.--A grocer had but four weights,

“How many genders are there ?” asked.the
schoomaster. “Three, sir,” promptly replied
little blue eyes; “the masculine, feminine, and
neuter.” “Give me an example of each,”

because you are a man ; 1 am a feminine, be
cause I am a girl.” “Very well, proceed.”
“I don’t know,” said the girl, “but I reckon

A windy M. P., in a tedious oration, stopp

Sheridan, “to a point of order.” Everybody
started in wonder at what the point of order
was. “What is it ?” said the Speaker. “I
think, sir,” said Sheridan, “it is out of order
for a windmill to go by water.”
A conceited fellow, in introducing his

sure you he is not so great a fool as lie seems.”
The gentleman immediately replied: “That
is exactly the difference betwen my friend and
myself.”
“Who was the first‘dead-head’ recorded in

A lady asked a noted doctor if he did not
think the small bonnets the ladies wore had
a tendency to produce acongestion of the brain. I
ly, and marched through the pen at the rate of
about a mile a minute, and cleared an eight
rail tence wnnous laying ttanus uiereon. We
then looked back and the cow was standing
where wc left the earth and committed ourself
to the air, looking more astonished than angry.
The old servant was at the other side of tbe pen,
with one hand on the fence and the other on
his bowels, bent almost to the ground iu a fit
of laughter. Straightening himself up and gat
hering breath, he exclaimed:
“ My Lord, master, you aiut gittin’ old yit,"
and he bowed himself again in acehinatory
paroxism. Not seeing anything particularly
funny in tho transaction ourself, and feeling in
disposed to persue our investigations in regard
to the cattle epidemic we left thc place.
If it should be our misfortune to lose any
more of our stock, wc would as soon lose that
cow as any other.
WEED’S PATENT SEWING MACHINE is be
fore us. We have examined it and tried it on vari
cus kinds of work, and for once confess ourselves
astonished that so simple a piece of mechanicm will
sew. Tbe complaint against Sewing Machines gene
rally, has been that they very easily get out of oruer>
and become useless to the purchaser. But here is
an exception, for there is, to all appearance, nothing
togetout of repair. And we wonder again,so simple
a thing trill sew such a beautiful, straight, even and
firm scam, that never can be rivaled, either in beau
ty or strength, by any work done iu the ordinary
way. It sews well on the finest muslin or the coars
est and hardest cloth, doing every kind of work
which families require, and is also adapted to shoo
and saddle manufacturers’ use, as we have seen some
very elegant specimens of work done on leather, that
was not only handsome but strong. We have never
seen so complete a Sewing Machine before, or one
we could so freely recommend to our readws, who
need such a thing as this; and since Sewing Machines
have become almost a necessity in every family
where there is much sewing .to bo done, wc advise
all to purchase this in preference to any other.
