.THE REPUBLICAN KICKER.
Only a few years ago the Cam-
<erous of Pennsylvania, father and
son, were recognized as prime
powers in the republican machine.
Until I8S0 they were, perhaps the
two most influential managers in
the party. To their boldness.and
sagacity, as well as to their lavish
liberality with money the Repub
lican party owes a great deal.
The failure of third-termism in
1880 was a serious set-back to the
Camerons. After the defeat of
Gen. Grant for the nomipation in
that year they tpst to a large de
gree the zeal which had hitherto
characterized their support of the
Republican party. They heartily
disliked Garfield, whom tVey re
garded as timid and insincere.

gusted the Camerons. Their in-

party whose nomination could
have been more galling to the
Camerons than was Blaine's
They sulked in silence through
the last campaign. In this cam
paign Senator Don Cameron lias
been heard from. There were ru
mors that he was quite indifferent
to the fate of the republican ticket
but this was denied. According
to the well informed New York
correspondent of the Philadelphia
Times Senator Cameron has been
expressing his opinions of the re
publican candidate for President
very plainly. While in New
York the other day he met Sena
tors Allison and Hale. With
them was an Indiana democrat
with whom Cameron was not ac
quainted. On being introduced
the Pennsylvania senator asked
the Indiana democrat if his people
‘ ‘iriwqded to let that creature,
Harrison, carry Indiana." On
being assured that Indiana would
go for Cleveland. Senator Cameron
let out his mind full on Harrison.
He declared,-, that his nomination
was a burlesque; that it fr reed the
Republican party to face certain
defeat; that nobody paid any atten
