We are glad to konw that at least one southern farmer has an opportunity of making a comfort able salary, More than that could be made at home by any one who has nerve enough to face the cot ton phantom and strangle it by the methods of business and common sense. At last accounts, however, the position in Australia was still open. — [Constitution. FARM AND GARDEN NOTES WANTED—A MODEL BRIDE. Alexander Dumas is fhe richest writer in the world. The senatae is like a duck. It always has a bill before it. When you go out angling with your best girl it is well to take your fishing smack along. . The Emperor of China evident ly does not think that marriage is a failure. He is about to spend £2,500,000 on his wedding. A fall of only a degree or two in the temperature Saturday night would have whitened the hills a~ round Fayetteville vith frost. All predicts an early winter; let us hope and pray for an early frost before its time in the fever stricken regions of Flarida. A Georgia daily advetises as a great feature for its Sunday issue articles on “Is marriage a failure? and is death painless? with inters views with a number ef experts.” LOOK AT THE FACTS. Weeks and weeks ago in his Fort Huron speach Judge Thur man said that ho would like for -somebody ttVglve lilm in erne in stance in which a manufacturer has increased wages because of a raise in the tariff No republican organ or orator has supplied the iniormation for which J u dge Thur man asked. The only attempt at a reply has •been in the statement that while-, a high tariff may not increase wa ges a lower tariff would surely re duce.them. This proposition is rediculous on its face, but the Providence Journal has taken the pains to expose its fallacy in the light of history. The Journal has carefully gone over the record in connection with the tariff for seventy pears past, It is deffinite- ly ascertained that not once dur ing this period has a reduction in the tariff resulted in a rednetion in workingmen’s wages. It will take a good many of Mr. Blaine's Eu ropean views and Mr. McKinleys smooth periods to rub out a big fac tlike that.—[Macon Telegraph. AN OPENING IN AUSTRAs ■ LIA. • There is an opening for some enterprising American jarjner in le British colony of Queenstown, mstralia. The"secretary of the jlonjT reSfntly offered a yearly ilary of three thousand dollars to ny thoroughly equipped Ameri- vn farmer who will go and teach Ltnerican methods to Australians, i there has been no resbonce to s. advertisement, the secretary the colony has ii.ct eased the *rt three thousand seven hun- i—a pretty fair salary, ^onsidased. j_ rates, one shold think !e would be plenty of appli es for the position, but it is d that there are only a few on i at the agricultural depaitment. rtainly here is a good opportun for the well-meaning farmer io has been engaged all his life eing from the gaunt and hag- rd phantom of cottou which les in the fence corners and he ld the doors of ginbouses—a ffj^ and elusi ve ghost that sits The following has been extract ed from a Mnnich journal: “Matrimonial.—I am the here ditary posses sor of a domain and ne vly built c. stlf, s'tuated in beautiful part of the Bavarian for ests. The castle, which has many fine apartments, ts surrounded with mountains, lovely meadows a id fielbs, through which rivulets wind, woods for the hunt and streams for angling; it stands in charming valley, wherein the town of Cham, with its many old tow ers, castles of ancient knights, and ruins of the remotest ages, inspire the sonl with poe ical feelings “But however delightful the spot may be to those.jndge of rnral life by the of Virgil, Horace and De. lille, I think it very melancholy to behold none but my self in my fine rooms, and to see none but my own person reflected in my looking glass, I have, there fore, resolved to marry, like other sitns pletons; and since it is affirmed taht marriages are made in heav en. and are bat a lottery, to see what heaven may have in store for me, and what fair creature the wheel of fortune may allot me. Wi’h this in view I views to all young ladies through the medium of the newspapers. “The one 1 wish to marry mnst be between 16 and 20 years of age she must have fine hair, fine teeth and beautiful little teet. She must he born of good and horn st pa rents, She must dress elegantly, but plainly, in either silk or velvit, but no other materials. She shall be allowed music only when she is perfect injthat art, it being tire- some to listen""to bad perlormers who annoy visitors in so many bouses. She will be mi,tress of the house in all domestic matters, and I myself shall be happy fr yield to her reasonable whims, being a great enemy to slavish .obedience and submission, whence In my openion, all quarrels and discontent derive their origin; but she must accempany me in all my journeys and excursions, because it is, in my obenion, a shame that a man should go abont day and night, living in sp endor at hotels, while his wife is left at home a- lonc to prey to ennui. “I must now say something about myself. I am 70 years old according to the almanac, but I am only 25 judging by health and strength. 1 am always cheerful. I seek lor pleasure when strictest honor admit of it. If, therefore, there exists a handsome young girl willing to bustle ab ut on horseback, in traveling or at home with an old man still hale, hearty and active, she may write to trie and I will go to meet her, to see 1 er and let her see me, at any place within 100 miles of Munic 1 -’, hut not furtner, engaging c n my vvordof honor that her name shall never be uttered. Theodore, Ba ron von Holberg of Broech, com- mandea of the Order of St. Ann and Cr p ain-Colonel of ,he Rhine and the Maese. Munich, at the Black Eagle, 15 Nov. 1S88.” Clover makes very best hay. Do work well, and make each motion count. Milk needs especial care and protection from all filth. Cleanliness on the farm does more for its excellence than the expenditure of money. Pastures cannot be continually cropped without something being returned to prevent loss of fertility. Animals are constantly growing fatter or poorer, and it is for tie farmer's interest to note which way the growth goes, Befo; manures carf prodnoe their full and profitable effect upon the soil, the land must be made dry by drainage or other means. The extensive use of insilage npon any farm is chiefly a questipn of convenience and economy which local conditon must decide. It pays to produce the best. An iuferior artical is always sold at a loss, the best butter, the best beef, the choicest poultry, well dressed’; or the best butter, put up in nca“ packages, always sells his goods at a profit. As food for cattle, as well as other kinds of farm stock, esilage forms a good and very cheap sub stitutte forroots, and its condi - mental effects are especially appar eut. But the usual ensilage crops fail to fill the place of the root crop in a judicious farn rotation. A silo or two, well built, but not too expensive, will convenient and economical on most farms, to convert waste producs into ed ible forage, and to save crops which at other time might be lost if not to preserve some crops spei- ally grown for ensilage. In feeding, the best results fol low a modetate ration of ensilage, rather than its entire sudstitution for dry course fodder. Exccp in the case of animals fed to main tain their weight, ensilage cannot be recommended as a substitut for more than half the long fora 4 - consumed.
