EDITORIAL NOTES.
E, L. Harper, the notorious
p-esid int of the fidelity bank of
Cincinnata, who is now a convict
in the Ohio penitentiary, has be*

WJiy is ft that the protection
pipers of the south never allude
to the fact that President Cleve-
and obtvned a conllsrahle plu
rality of the popular vote of the
United States, and not less thrn
half a million plurality of the white
or intelligent vote? Are they un
willing to admit this indorsem nt
by the people of the Democratic
po’icy of tanff reform.
Happily, the country is seldom
startled by such a horrible series
of events as have in the last few
days occurred at Birmingham.
It is almost beyond belief *thut a
man of fa : r standing, of such abili
ties as to earn year after year a
salary above the average paid act
tire and useful business men,
should deliberately murder his
wife and children, carefully con
cealing their bodies, as a prelimi
nary to a second marriage, into

I mu leaving thee my darling.
I am leaving thoc-my darling,
Angel one I love so well;
Duty calls me from thy presence,
In a fureign land to dwell.
Parting words have all been spoken,
And thy voice to me is still;
But thy loving smile is with me,
Thoughts of tlieo my bosom till.
’Though the mists of time and distance
Drop their yail—our lirec between.
Still will I thy memory cherish,
O’er my heart thou’lt e’er he queen,
Seas mav part me from my loved one,
I may wander far and wide,
Yet in dreams I will see thee ever,
Fondly doom theo hj rny Sid j.
And it may he death’s dark waters
O’er my form will surge and sweep,
He whose heart tnou’st hound so firmly
In a foreigu land may sleep.
But thou’lt not forget my darling,
That I will jove thec.evou then ;
For from heaven the angels love us,
Love is heaven’s brightest gem.
Fare tlieo well! from out the shadow,
Comes the tender, sad refrain,
Like die sound of mournful music,
Or the sighing of the rain,
'Round my heart the notes are ringing
Like the solemn Sabbath hell,
Absence makes the heart grow fonder,
Blest beloved, fare thee well.
