The Economist goes into almost every state in the Union, from California and Montana to Florida. We wish to say some things about Winder In this issue for the benefit of those readers who have never seen our little city, which for location and beauty is unsurpassed. Inde and few places are so favored in all respects that help to make a city as Winder. In all the vast territory through which the great Seaboard Air Line system passes, a distance of over 600 miles from Portsmouth, Va., to At lanta Georgia, there is no place thut enchants the traveler and impresses him more than Winder, with its beau tiful streets, fertile country surround ing i r , its railroad advantages, health fulness and access to any part of the world. Tho Gainesville, Jefferson and Southern railroad which passes trough tne city, in connection with the Sea. board, makes it a competing point and gives the lowest freight rates. Never has any southern town, without any effort on the part of its citizens, had such a substantial and continual growth —starting twelve or fourteen years ago with only two houses and uow having a population of 1400. It is not a boom town and has simply grown from natural consequences witli , out the aid of capital or manufacturing enterprises. Dr. Bush, whq is the pioneer of Winder, aud whose faith in the ultimate growth of the place to a city of several thousand has never faul tered, has just laid off 1200 lots South of tho Seaboard railroad which will open up the prettiest and most de sirable portion of Winder. An experi enced engineer did the work, and an eve was had to laying it off with a view of our place in the near future being a place of large dimensions. Any one desiring a change in location would do well to investigate Winder and her advantages The Economist, the lead ing paper of this section, the official or gan of Winder and the only paper pnblisned in this section, will take pleasure in answering any enquiries of those from a distance, or sending sam ple copies of paper to any one you may wish. Relative to our city aud what others think of it, we copy the follow ing letter from Governor Candler of Georgia for the benefit of those at a distance: State of Georgia, 'f Executive Office r Atlanta. ' Feby. 8, 1899. Having been president of the Gaines ville, Jeff rsoii & Southern Railroad Company, and having built the first railroad that ever reached the little city of Winder, I have watched its progress with much interest. While with the engineers locating the road and the contractors building it, I was impressed with two things—first, the unusually fine location of Winder, on a high, splendidly drained plateau, two or three hundred feet above the level of the sur- 20 CENTS GIVEN AWAY Cut this out and take it to the drug gist named below and you will receive a regular Resize bottle of Dr Sawyer’s Ukatine for sc. DeLaPERRIERE, Winder, Ga. rounding country, and about a thousand feet above the level of the sea, which renders it absolutely free from malaria, affords it an unexhau9table supply of the purest and coldest freestone water. There is no more healthy place in Geor gia or any other state. Secondly—l was struek with the splendid agricultural possibilities of the country for many miles around the city in the counties of Jackson, Gwinnett, Walton and Oconee. The lands are level, or rather gently undulating, in tersected in every direction by limped streams of the purest water and are unusually fertile adapted to the pro duotion of every variety of frnit and grain grown in any pi.rt of N >rth Amoiiiu above the tropic*. 1 kno v of no section o. country nor any town in the south to which I would go to make a home in preference to Winder. It is perhaps not amiss for me to say that I have not nor have I ever had any pecuniary intererest in the town or iu either of the counties named, nor have Ia dollar in either of the roilroads crossing there. I speak purely from a disinterested stanpoiut. Signed Allkn D Candler, Governor of Georgia. FOR LA GRIPPE Thomas Whitfield & Cos., 240 Wabash av., corner Jackson-st., one of Chicago’s oldest and most prominent duggists, rec ommend Cnamberlain’s Cough Remedy for la grippe,as it not only gives prompt and complete r elief, but also counteracts any tendency of U grippe to result in pneumonia.
