(Doryphora 10 line Ata.) I notice in a number of the gardens of Winder that this dreaded enemy of the Irish potato crop has made its ap pearance in our vicinity. The part of the name, 10 line ata, is so called because there are ten black lines longitudinally along the elytra, or wing coverts, of the insect. The inter val between the black stripes is white, so that from this description it can be easTy recognized. They are not diffi cult to find however, as all you have to do is to examine your Irish potatoes es pecially about noon. The female deposits a cluster of or ange colored eggs of frrm a dozen to fifty or more, on the under side of the leaf, which hatch in about seven days, and the grubs immediately begin to feel upon the leaves and this they con tinue to do until fully grown, which oc curs in about fourteen days in favorable weather and a little longer if unfavor able. They theu enter the ground, where they remain in the lower state for about ten days, and then emerge perfect beetles. Taking 500 as an average number of beetles raised by one pair, and four as the number of bioods in a season, and it gives 62,500,000,-000 as the possible num ber descended from one mother in one season; and I do not place the figures higher than most entomologists. The probabilities are that we will have no Irish potatoes the present year unless measures are adopted to extermi nate this pest. If every one will take care to kill the beetles as they appear, and crush the eggs as well, this may be done, bat vait until they pr.duce 60,000,000,000 more, like the grass-hopper on the "sweet tater vine,” and this will be impossible. If Paris Green, or London Purple is mixed with pulverized plaster in the proportion of one pound of the poison ‘0 twenty of plaster, and dusted over he leaves while wet with dew, or after a shower, it will cause the death of all grabs or perfect insects feeding upon them. ( ire must be taken in dusting with these mixtures not to breathe them, as WINDER. JACKSON COUNTY, GEORGIA, THURSDAY, HAY 4, 1899. gggggg both are virulent poisons. A good plan is to put the mixture in a tin can with a perforated bottom and shake this over the plants as yon walK. If sprinkled with water, in which either of these poisons has been stirred, it will prove effective; but as neither dissolve in water the stirring must be repeated at frequent intervals to pre vent their settling to the bottom. Let every one who has a patch of Irish potatoes go to work to extermi nate the beetle; for the last brood hatched go into the gronnd and lie dor rnant all winter, ready, when spring opens up to attack the next crop. It is said “Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty. ” The saying may be paraphrased for the present year and read “Eternal vigilance is the price of potatoes.’’ S. P. Orb. Tax Receiver’s Notice.
