The Winder Band
Gets The Prize.
The Gainsville Chautauqua opened
Monday with a large crowd from differ
ent sections of the state and the success
so far is quite gratifying to the manage
ment and to the many friends of this
educational movment. one of the feat
tires of Monday and Tuesday was the
musical contest between several brass
bauds from this portion of the state —a
prize of s33.oo]in gold]h\vinj been offer
ed to.the band making the best music.
The Winder band, although hardly two
months old, entered the contest and our
people felt much interest in the result.
When the train reached Winder Tues
day night late the news had alread y
preceded it and a large delegation was at
the depot to meet our Winder band—the
finest band in the state to its age—an and
give the boys a royal welcome and hear ty
congratulations for their victory. They
got the prize. We are all proud for
them and feel they deserved it. Mr.
Ferguson, the manager, and all the
members of the band were delighted
with the Chautaqua and the treatment
received at the hands of Prof. Vau-
Hoose and the citizens of Gainesville
generally. They say the Chautauqua
is a grand success and that every one
who possibly can should take it in.

An old negro woman was found in the

the mountains last Saturday a little a
headoftime. They got homesick and
cut off two weeks of their outing. It is
a hard matter for a resident of Winder
to stay away over a week.
Mr. L. C Wilson and son, Mr. Arthur
Wilson, of Dry Pond, were in Winder
Monday on a business trip. They did
not stay long enough to take in the
city, but were so pleased they promised
to come back later and stay long enough
to see more of it.
Mr. John H. Smith spent a few and ays
in Madison thts week.

Mr. T.S. Johnson, of Johnson’s Mills
left for Oregon first of the week to be
gone about two mouths. He well go
over most of that state<*ud portions of
Washington while gone aud has promise
ed to give The Economist a few letters
descriptive of the country during his
stay. This is a long trip, but The Econ
omist wishes for Mr. Johnson that it

that he may return home safe and satis

On last Sunday night U. S. Deputy
collector J. J. ;Meadow, assistedby
Messrs B. H. Kinuebrew and B. J.
Meadow, destroyed a big still two miles
from Statham, this county. They
found no one at work but destroyed
1000 gallons of beer and a copper still of
185 gallons capacity.

Hoschton School.
Profs. John W. Glenn and S. P. Oir
have been unanimously elected as joint
principals of Hoschton High School,
The trustees made a wise selection and
The Economist predicts that Hoschton
will have the largest and most prosper
ous school ever known in its history.
The above two gentlement have a state
reputation as teachers and they will
both put their energies together to
make the Hoschton school the equal of
any in Georgia. The people of Hosch
ton should congratulate themselves on
securing their services.
