about recovered from the effects of the

Mr. T. J. Vickers one of the old and
respected citizens of Paradise gave The
Economist office a pleasant call this
week.

Mr. W. J. Rose of Chandler’s district
was iu the city first of the week. He
is still quite feeble but is slowly improv
ing.
Miss Nellie B. Jones, one of Macon’s
accomplished young ladies is the guest
of Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Strange on Broad
street.
Capt. C. W. Finch and prof. Bodiford
of Galilee and Mr, Asa Watson of Olix
were in the city last Saturday and hon
ored The Economist office with their
presence.
Mr. Knight, the Photographer will
to away Saturday for a few days to do
work in the country. Call and get your
work before then.
Mrs. Dr. Bradly accompanied her
neice, Miss Georgia Jackson, last week
to California and will spend a few
months there before returning,
Mrs. M. A. Stewart has just returned
from Loganville where she has been
visiting several weeks with her two
sons, Messrs D. Y. & F. M, Hodges.
Born to Mr. and Mrs. S. E. Sharpton
last Monday a fine boy. Mother and
child are doing well and Sam is so
proud of his boy he has not slopped any
since.
Mr. J. S. McGarity, one of the brigh
and intelligent young men of Jefferson,
spent a while with ns while in the city
Monday. He was on his way home
from Jersey where he had been visiting
a few weeks.
Mrs. Toole and Misses Alice Toole and
Rennett Westcott of Macon are the
guests of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Toole for
a few weeks. Mrs Toole is the mother
of Mr. W. EL Toole and Miss Alice his
sister, Miss Reunett Westcott is a sister
of Mrs. W. H. Toole.
Prof. Flanigan, president of Perry-
Rainey college, of Auburn, was in the
city last Saturday and gave ns a pleas
ant call. Under his management this
institution of learning has been quite
prosperous and the college has a bright
future.
Mr. J. O. Horton came home last week
to rest a few week and get the South
Georgia malaria out of him. Jud is a
jolly, good fellow and his many Winder
friends are glad to have him with them

Stockholders Meet and Elect
Officers and Work will Begin
at Once. Col. Jas. M. Smith
Was Present and was Elected
President.
The stockholders of the Winder Cot
ton—seed Oil and Fertilizer Company
met in the city hall yesterday afternoon
and perfected an organization. The
charter and subscription list were ac
cepted, the full amount of stock having
been subscribed. The stockholders then
elected the following officers:
Col. Jas. M. Smith, of Smithsouia,
president; May or R. L. Carithers Vice
president; both of whom, by virtue of
their offices are also derectors. Aud Dr.
J. C. DeLaPerriere. N. J. Kelly, W. H.
Bush, G. W. Smith and Judge R. B.
Russell the other five directors, making
in all seven. The meeting was harmon
ious and unanimous in all of its proceed
ings and all were enthusiastic. The dir
ectors will begin work at once and have
the mill ready for operation for the com
ing season. This action yesterday is the
beginning of a bright era for Winder
and if our people will all pull together
now and do their duty before the expir
ation of another twelve months wa will
have a Cotton factory and several other
enterprises that wi'l add largely to the
growth and prosperity of our town and
soction.
Col. Smith was highly pleased with
Winder’s outlook and will be a powerful
factor in its future advancement. His
election as president and Mayor Ca
rithers as Vice President were two wise
selections. Dr. J. C. DeLaPerriere was
the unanimous choice as one of the di
rectors and his election gives much
strength to the company. All the di
rectors are strong men and fully alive
to every interest of Winder and the
section around it. They are men who
will look closely after every detail to
make this enterprise a success and prof
itable to the stockholders.
Mrs. Sallie Harrison, Ridgeway, Ga,

Mr. E. W. Greeson, of Cedar Hill,
came in yesterday and renewed his sub
scription for another year. He said it
was dry np in his section bat he could
not afford to stop taking his paper. Mr.
Greeson is made of the right stuff and
we feel sure he will soon get plenty of
rain.

There will be two United States mail
boxes put up by Postmaster Smith. One
at each hotel. This will be quite a con

Capt. and Mrs. H. R. Howard, of
Olix, were in the city Monday, also Mr.
aud Mrs. Oscar Howard. There is no
more hospitable home to be found any
where than that of Capt. and Mrs.
Howard, and their friends always re
ceive a hearty welcome with them. We
hare enjoyed tneir nospnausy oiwn uu
we trust they may be spared many
years yet and that we may be so fortu
nate as to visit them every year of that
time.
The excursion crowd to Charleston
all reached home safe and sound Tnes*
day and all say they enjoyed their trip

A Big Eel.
Mr. Wilson Estes while ont bathing
first of the week in Mr. Sims’ mill pond
stepped on an eeL The eel’s back was
broken and it oame to the surface as
soon as Wilson’s feet were off of it.
Wilson then grabbed the eel and swam
to land. It weighed 6 pounds and was
the largest eel ever seen in this section

A Model Farmer.
Yesterday morning we rode out with
Mr. W. B. Mathews to his two farms—
one in the oity limits and the other one
mile ont. Mr. Mathews is a model
farmer and for the dry year has one of
the finest crops to be seen. It would
pay all the farmers around here to visit
his farm and see his terraces. He be
lieves in building terraces that will hold
the water however heavy the rainfall.
In a few years his land will double in
value because it will have doubled in
richness of soil.

Monday afternoon occurred one of the
most enjoyable events of the season.
The Parsonage Aid society of the M. E.
