ORGANIZE A “BOLT.”
CITBERiNQ EXTREMELY LIVELY.
jyftfmatlc Fight I* t° Be Waged Again.*
Nominee of Louisville Convention.
Resolution* Adoptd.
The anti-Goebel meeting at Bowling
Green, Ky., Monday afternoon ended
in the greatest disorder. Personal
violence was resorted to several times
before the convention was adjourned.
One naan was struck with brass
fcnucks and several others received
blows. For a time it looked as- if the
meeting would end in a general riot.
Pistols and knives were drawn, and
but for a temporary adjournment,
more bloodshed would surely have
followed.
It was county court day and an un
usually large crowd was in the city.
The meeting had been widely adver
tised and was largely attended. A num
ber of prominent speakers from a dis
tance, among the number being Har
veT Myers and Theodore Hallman, of
Covington; Hon. Thomas H. Hays, of
Louisville, the defeated candidate for
the nomination of lieutenant governor;
William H. Smith; ex United States
District Attorney Jim Williams, of
Louisville; J. C. Flournoy, attorney,
of Fulton; J. J. Constantine, of Sparta,
and others were present.
J. McKenzie Moss, a gold democrat
of Bowling Green, called the meeting
to order. An effort was made to elect
a secretary from the local newspaper
ranks, but each one suggested refused
to serve.
Trouble I Precipitated.
Mr. Moss was continued as perma
nent chairman. Harvey Myers, of
Covington, an oldtime enemy of Goe
bel, attempted to address the conven
tion, but he had scarcely begun the
address when he was interrupted by
someone in the hall with the ques
tion:
“Did you betray Hon. Will T. Cox,
v-fcose picture yon now face, in the
race for the speakership of the Ken
tucky house of representatives?”
Mr. Cox was a resident of Bowling
Green and was a very popular man.
He was defeated by Myers, his per
sonal friend, by a few votes for
speaker.
This remark set the convention in
an uproar. A great howl went up
and in a minute there was the great
est confusion ever witnessed at a po
litical gathering in Kentucky.
During the disturbance the commit
tee on resolutions reported. The res
olution was declared carried. Fearing
more serious trouble, a motion to ad
journ was declared carried and half
the crowd left the room, when several
personal altercations occurred on the
outside.
M hen part of the crowd had left the
had something like order was again
restored and many persons were in
duced to remain and hear a number of
speeches.
rhe resolutions deny that the ticket
18 entitled to or should receive the
support of the party in the state.
The convention repudiated the eo
r':'hed nominee, and “in order to pre
se‘ ,e the integrity of the party and to
F€cnre the election of democrats,” re
quested a “provisional executive com

OLD-TIME EXON LIKE DAYS.
Life of White Trappir* Before Gold
Was Discovered.
One of the pioneer gold seekers, Dr.
Sweeney, was fortunate In meeting
with Geo. W. Carmack, the discover
er of the Klondike, and from him he
gathered much interesting informa
tion concerning the habits of the In
dian tribes on the Yukon and the white
men who long before the discovery of
the treasure hidden beneath the froz
en moss and gravel of the Klondike
Valley lived with them and shared the
hardships of their dally life.
“Some of the things that Carmack
told me,” said Dr. Sweeney, “were en
tirely new to me, and all very Interest
ing. One of the things I have always
been anxious to know was ho\Y the
white men lived who hunted and
trapped along the Yukon in the days
when It was thousands of miles to the
trading posts and civilization. Car
mack explained to me.
“ ‘We were compelled,’ he said, ‘to do
just as the Indians did. In the sum
mer time, besides game and fish, we
ate berries, for Alaska is the home of
ail sorts of berries. And besides these
we obtained other substitutes for the
vegetables of civilization. The princi
pal of these were grass roots, certain
small bulbs or tubers, and the Inside
bark of various trees.
“ ‘ln the winter we ate fisli, meat,
and berries, which the squaws dried in
the summer, and stored away. Then
also the little bulbs I have mentioned
came in very handily. I have forgot
ten now what they were called, but
they, as all old Alaska men know,
form the principal food of the timber
squirrels of that country during the
winter. It was by rifling the hoards of
those little animals that we obtained
our supply of the bulbs In the winter.
Their hoards are always to be found in
a solitary spruce tree in u thicket of
stunted pines. That was the way in
which we located them. The reason
for tlii3 I never knew. Asa substitute
for bread—of course, the Indians then
had no flour—we ate a species of pud
ding made of the blood of the game
we killed, boiled with dried berries
and sometimes with the little bulbs
from the squirrel boards.’
“I asked Carmack how the Indians
in those days obtained salt for their
meat. Every one knows that to a
while man at least, salt is a necessity,
and not a mere flavoring matter. In
answer Carmack told me something
that was entirely new to me. He 6aid
that the Indians made it a practice not
to throw away the water in which
they boiled their meat, but allowed It
to remain in the kettle. In course of
a short time, he told me, the water or
broth would become extremely salty
and could then be maintained at what
ever degree of saltiness deemed de
sirable by the addition of fresh water
to replace some of the salt broth
dipped out and thrown away.”

This has become an experimental age
for babies. The writer of this recently
saw the ten-months-old baby of a doc
tor whose wife was a trained nurse.
The baby had never worn a thread of
flannel or shoos and stockings a min
ute in its life, and very seldom wore
anything on its head. It was very
sturdy-looking and had never known a
moment's illness. Its clothing on a
hot day consists of two pieces only,
and the women can tell what they are.
It is never tortured with starched em
broideries and trimmed clothes.—At
