Got ready to go to Ciucinnat next
week.
The National People’s Party conven
tion comes off next week at Cincinnati.
The English have not whipped the
Boers yet and the indications now are
that it will be sometime yet in the fu
ture before they do.
The Cincinnati convention to nomi
nate candidates for president and vice
president of the People’s party comes
off next week. This will be the largest
and most enthusiastic National conven
tion hold in the United States this
year. The rates are low and every one
who possibly oau should go.
It is right amusing to see how some
of our littU democratic exchanges try
to console themselves by 'announcing
one or two Populists returning to the
democratic party. The number is so
small that we see little for consolation
to these democratic editors. Populists
are not worrying themselves about any
genuine one of their faith fulling from
grace. If these little editors can keep
all those they still claim, from leaviug
a sinking ship and embracing populism,
which is the only salvation from ruin
and wreok, they will do better than
they have been doing for several
months past.
In The Wrong Pew.
Editor Craig’s leading editorial in
last week’s Eagle under the caption of
“Vote As You Pray,” is one of the fin
est productions from his pen we have
read in a long while. If every voter in
Georgia ooold read it and then with all
the earnestness of their souls bow in
secret prayer regularly for the next six
months every day, there would not bs
enough democrats le t in Georgia to
elect a bailiff for Gainesville G. M. dis
trict. You are in the wrong pew, Bra
Craig, to write such editorials. Ca .
The Democratic Primary.
The Atlanta Constitution off;April
15th, has the following concerning the
democratic primary which comes off on
May 15 th,
‘‘A departure was made in the reso
lutious adopted in relation to the pledg
ing of the participating in the election.
Often, heretofore, a voter would vote
for one man and oousider himselt
pledged to abide the result of primary
only so far as that office was ooucerued.
But the resolutions adopted does away
with that Aim flam business. Before a
populist or republican can vote in the
primary of May 15th for auy candidate,
NATIONAL CONVENTION
OF THE PEOPLE’S PARTY.
Cincinnati, Ohio, May pth-nth, 1900.
he must pledge himself to abide the re
sult of the primary aud support its
nominees from Governor Candler down
to the successful candidate for legisla
tive nomination.”
We deem it unnecessary to say any
thing to the Populist of this county
about voting in the democratic primary.
A democrat would consider it an in
sult to be asked to participate in a pop
ulist primary aud no self-respecting
Populist would think of voting in a
democratic primary. It is true most of
us have our preferences among the de
mocratic candidates and our personal
frieuds, outside of politics, and would
rather lave these friends succeed in
getting what honors may oome out of
the nominations; but, if there be a pop
ulist in the county who would delight
in voting for one of these candidates
through personal friendship will read
oirefully what the Constitution says
above, he will see the embarrassing po
sition iu which he would place himself,
aud no true Populist can compromise
his honor and his principles by voting
in a democratic primary aud pledging
his support to the democratic nominees.
We do not believe there is a Populist
so weak-kneed as to entertain such a
thought. It would not be honest poli
tics for Populists to do this and no hon
orable Democrat expects it of you nor
would he have as much respect for you
were you to participate iu their primary.
If you are a Populist stay out of Demo
cratic primaries. If you are a democrat
it is your duty to vote in Democratic
primaries’and try to elect the best men
you have for the different offices.
Populists will have their own candi
dates aud will make‘a manly aud open
fight to elect them.
Stand By Your Colors.
BY JUDOS JAMES K HINES.
In Dalton Herald.
Our State Convention has done
its work and adjourned. I regret very
much that I was unavoidably kept
away from it. Being absent in the
flesh, I was with its members in the
spirit. i
The convention has given us a splen
did platform, and clean, able and up
right cmdidutes. The head of the
ticket is a gentleman of ability and ir
reproachable integrity. Iu character,
in all that goes to make a noble gentle
man, Col. Traylor has no superior iu all
my knowledge. He would make an
ideal Governor of this great common
wealth.
All our candidates are good men.
Our platform rc-afflrmed the doc
trines which our party has asserted
from its birth. It has made no change
in doctrine. Now what is the duty of
Georgia Popnlist? Manifestly we ought
to stand by our oandidates and our prin
ciples. KEEP OUT OF THE EEMO
CRAT PRIMARY to be held ou May
15tb, next. What business has a Popu
list in a democrat primary? None. Let
ns steer clear of all fusion. It means
only oonfnsion for Popnlists.
Why shonld we abandon oar party or
principles and our most sacred honor,
to sneak back, like whipped oars, into
the democratic part} ?
There is greater need of the People’s
party in Georgia and the United States
today, than at any time in the past.
We have seen the triumph of none of
oar principles.
Then, let as gather around oar stan
dard. Let os catoh the old time enthu
siasm. Let ns take courage. Let every
Popnlist in Georgia do his whole duty.
James K. Hines.
Atlanta, Ga., April 16, 1900.
The Populists convention in Atlanta
last week put forward a oomplete state
ticket and a most admirable platform.
It is unfortunate for the people of Geor
gia that the dominant party will not
formulate a platform of principals. In
that way some excellent reforms might
be aooomplished. The trouble lies in
the fact that the denworatic machine
leaders feel no ooncern for the people’s
welfrre or the progress of the state.
They are concerned only with the dis
tribution of the “pie.”—DeKalb New
Era.
