Homer, Ga., July, 12th 1900 Editor Economist:—Hon. M. W- Howard was with us today, and al though, we had only ter days notice, and the farmers are still in the grass, yet we had a good crowd to hear this noble "Rorrau” discuss the issues of the Populist, which he did as Howard can; those who hare heard him know what that means; those who hare never heard him, should not let an opportu nity pass unimproved to catch the in spiration, to noble thought and viction, which his words call forth. One thought which he presented, with reference to the Populists as keep ing open house, and keeping the fires of truth and love burning, ready to receive all true reformers when they find as they shall, that they have no other place to go, is enough to revive and en courage the most despondent to fight on for the faith which must cover the land as the waters cover the sea. A. H. Stapler. WOULD NOT SUFFER SO AGAIN FOR FIFTY TIMES ITS PRICE. I awoke last night with severe pains in my stomach. I never felt so badly in all my life. When I came down to work this morning I felt so weak 1 conld harkly work. I went to Miller & McCurdy’s drug store aud they recom mended Chamberlain’s Colic, Cholera and Diarrhoea Remedy. It worked like magic and one dose fixed me alright. It certainly is the finest thing I ever used for stomach trouble. I shall not be without it in my home hereafter, for I should not care to endure the sufferings of last night again for fifty times its price.—G. H. A freshman came along, and, thinking to have some fan, shouted: “Bay, there, Sambo, you ought not to burn that stuff.” •‘Why?’ inquired Samba “Because,” replied the freshman, '• fit’ll make that grass aa black as yoa are.” “Well, mass a,” retorted Sambo, “dat’aall right. Some of the British troops in th© Irish rebellion did not fight particular ly well. The contractors will enjoy the war With China. They are p&rtiotio for th money there is ia it. One incident ot not ice' during —— government paid St, Louis contractoi t sl. 50 each fo r cavalry bridle bits buy ing them by the hundred dozens. From the same stock that was filling the gov ernment orders, a dealer in this town bought them at 20 cents each! Do you wonder why mmy people are not op posed to wai?lf the supplies for the army were made in public factories, there would be no profit to any rascally contractors there would be no sentiment for war. What was done in the way of bridle bits was done in every supply furnishod the nation for munitions of war. That is what patriotism mean* as a rule. Dr. Jonson deflued it as the last resort of rascals —but he was not wise!— Exchai.ge. The SEABOARD AIR LINE RAIL WAY offers superior schedules for tho Conference of Epworth Leagners at At lanta Jnly 25th to 29th. “Individualism is Progress and Life." Chioago Correspondent St Paul Pioneer Press. It gives the man of sentiment a pang of sorrow to walk down Fifth avenue any afternoon and realize what a fright ful straggle for mere existenoe this life is. There are hundreds of people gath er to get the first editions of the after noon papers, not for news of the war m Luzon or Natal, nor even for infer ms lion of local event*, but to read the “wants.” Eagerly buying, perhaps with their last pemes, oopies of papers, they hurriedly scan the page contain ing “situations offered” and dart away up street or down in search of a place to earn something to “keep the wolf from the door.” Their haste is born of the fear that somebody else will secure the position before they can reach the person offering it. And it frequently happens that 100 men and boys will ap ply for a single place within an hour after it is stated in the public prints that it is open. Thus the struggle goes on from day to day until, occasionally at least, a jump from the high bridge at Lincoln park or a revolver shot in South j Clark street violently ends it. NO 27.
