I feol grateful beyond expression to the many reformers who h vo given mo their hearty support iu sustaining Tun Economist. I want to ay to you tint the publish - iug of a genuiue reform pa. o: is no easy task. There are many trials and diffi culties with which to contend It is an nsy matter to publish a wishy washy paper without a positive stand on any question. It is an easy matter to run a democratic paper in the South besause there is a certain element that will en dorse anything a democratic paper says and give it their support. Reformers and > not appreciate their own papers and give thorn that zealous and unselfish support they should. They will find fault and take the pipor for two or three years before paying and often refuse to pay at all. Again th>y will say: “Well l can get the Weekly Constitution, Journal and other city weeklies for the same price and they have so much more reading matter than the Tiie Economist.” This, to say the leud, is a very selfish and un patriotic view to take, one that is very discouraging to the man who sacrifices, works and tods to ruu a reform paper, with the soul view of betteri g the con dition of men who use those ungrateful excuses for refusing to take a reform pa per, but who are taking one or more pa pers that ridicule aud light them. The renders of The Economist and all genuine Populists in Jackson, Wa) ton and Oconee are ~s much interested in flip success of the reform movement a- I am, and ought to be as willing to make some sacrifice to sustain our pa p r as I am willing to mako. They ought to have the cause at heart enough anil have the manhood to pay a year or two years, if necessary, in ad vance aud get others to take it. I AM A I’OPCLIST Because I believe populism i.i right, ..L.d I never expect to be a traitor to it and go hack to worship idols that I have renounced. lam not a populist for per il or to satisf.v political ambi tion i have always been ready’ to make -.e'-ifices for principles 1 loved and be haved to be just and righ, and am still willing to do so. Neman who knows me as a friend can question the sincerity of my motives nor deny my honesty cf purpose NOW TO THE FRIENDS OF THIS P APER I wish to say that, Biuk or swim, live or die, survive or perish, I am with you in this fight to the end. Can you say ! the sanu? Have you the firmness, the determin ation, the manhood and the backbone jto stand by me and give me your gen erous support? The Economist will do all in its power to help defend your cause, perpetuate literty and give us a free country. Are you wiling to do this? i believe you are. 1 believe there are 1000 true and fearless populists in Jack sou county, men who are as trus as the needle to the pole to tin ir convictions, who will stand by me and give me their hearty support and influence and not only pay for their paper in advance, but work for if, defend it and give their patronage to those business men who advertise in its columns. We believe there are several hundred mote such men in Oconee and WaPor. Let me h"ur from you and lei me know that you ■’re our friend and that you | mean business. Kesp’t’ly, A. G. Lamar. The Georgia Legislature meets next Wednesday. Populism still lives in Georgia and will continue to live. We admire the man who has the cour ago of his convictions at heart strong enough to stand by them if he is in the minority. Populist Tickets. With a heart full of sadness and sor row we write of the death of Bob Pat rick. He was our friend and we mou. u his death. The questicv has often been asked, “what is a frieno?” n o our mind it is one who will inconvenience himself for you. It is one who’will come to you or to whom you feel you can gi when the muttering thunders of misiortune and the dark clouds of financial embarie33- ment havo almost crashed your hopes and rescue you from the destruction that seems inevitable. It is the man who sees that you are in trouble ar,d says “Let me help you.” Bob Patrick was this kind of a friend; and many are the men he has helped, aud many are the deeds of kindness he has shown his fellowmeu. He was not the man who would talk to you in a pleasant manner for policy sake. He was not the mao who would do a kiuduess only when he felt that he would get in return full value for his service rendered. We can but believe that such a man will receive a greater reward from the God all than the pretended Christian who pro fesses to follow the meek and lowly Nuzariue, but who would not visit us when in trouble or lend us a helping hand. Bob Patrick had as many warm and devoted friends as any man in Jackeou county, having twice been elected depu ty sheriff and would have been elected sheriff on the 3rd dav of this mouth had men been left to cast their ballots as their consciences dictated. He was forced to take his bed on the 2d day of the present month with fever aud grad ually grew worse until Thursday night, Oct lltli, when his soul took its flight t> the world beyond. He was 42 3 r ears of ago and leaves a wife aud six children now lying seriously ill with fever His death and the condition of his loved ones makes it peculiarly sad. Ha ;vas buried at Pentecost cemetery, five miles east of Winder £yid the hirge concourse of friends who attended his burial evi denced his popularity and the high es teem in which he was held. Th“ color ed people whom ho had so often be friended wept as well as the whites when they took a last long look at his dead form. The memory of Bob Patrick will ev- r be fresh to a- 5 . and we feel that he is sweetly resting in a brghtor world where justice, honor aud right are supreme and where the souls of such big hearted men as he will receive a happy welcome. A LIFE AND DEATH FIGHT. Mr. W. A. Hines of Manchester, la., w.itiug of his almost miarcnlous escape from death, says: “Exposure after meas les induced serious lung trouble, which ended in Consumption. I had frequent hemorrhages aud coughed night and day. All my doctors sai l I must soon die. Then i began to use Dr. King’s New Discovery for Consumption, which completely cured me. I would not be without it even if it cost $5,00 a bottle. Hundreds have used it on my recom mendation and all say it never fails to cure Throat, Chest aud Lung troubles.” Regular size 500 and SJ,OO, Trial hotel's free at Winder Drug, Cos., Important Notice.
