AMBUSH AMERICANS Twenty Men of 24th Regiment Overpowed By the Filipinos. MAJORITY OF THEM ARE CAPTURE) Interesting Details at Hand of t)i Cap ture and Rescue of Captain Shields and His Men. A Manila special via Hong Kong, October 16, says: A detachment of twenty men of the Twenty-fourth reg iment* while engaged in repairing telegraph wires October 10th, at a poiut near San Jose, Nuevo Ecija province, Lnzon, were set upon by 200 rebels and were overpowered and scattered. Seven of the Americans reached San Jose, but it is probable that the remainder were captured. The enemy surprised a party of scouts of the Forty-third infantry at a point three miles from TaklobaD, Leyte island, killing three of the Amerioans at the first volley. Two escaped and gave the aiarra, but the enemy succeeded in evading their pursuers. The native police of Taklo ban had eon spired to surprise the Americans. The bodies of the dead soldiers were badly mutilated. RESCUE OF SHIELDS AND MEN. Full details are now at hand as to the capture of Captain Devereux Shields and his party by the insur gents in the island of Mariuduque last month, aud their experiences prior to their rescue by General Luther E. Hare. After four weeks of captivity, hard treatment, hunger aud marching to avoid the rescuing force, which greatly aggravated the suffering of the wound ed, Captain Shields and his men were delivered by the Filipinos to General Haro last Sunday at Buena Vista, on Mariudnque coast. Captain Shields and his party, while operating north of Torrijos, were taken in ambush in the steep hills. They attempted to cut their way out to the coast, but became subjected to the enemy’s four sided fire, Captain Shields being shot twico and badly wounded. After four had been killed and five wounded, being out of ammu nition, the command surrendered through a misunderstanding among themselvep, to twenty five insurgent riflemen and 1,000 bolo men. The rebels separated their prisoners into small parties aud conveyed them heavily guarded to the mountains. On this news reaching Manila two companies of the 38th voluuteer in fantry, under Colonel George Ander son, were immediately sent to Marin duque. This force was followed by eight oompanis of the First infantry under General Hare. The combined force of 1,300 men proceeded to occu py all the towns in the island and to scour the country. General Hare gave the rebels one week to surrender the prisoners and the latter’s rifles. The Americans controlled the situation. The rebels percieved that it was only a question of time when the re lease of their prisoners would be effected and they opened up commu nications with General Hare, which resulted in the handing over of the captives, thirteen of whom, the sick aud wounded, were sent to Manila by the gunboat Villilabos, Lieutenant Simpson commanding. Captain Shields is improving. General Hare’s command will remain in Marinduque. He has given the in surgents until October ‘2lst to surren der themselves and fifty-one captured rifles, If they fail to comply he will undertake an active punitive cam paign. Captain Shields and his companions suffered greatly at the hands of their captors, who robbed and maltreated them. The rebel officers had to re strain the bollo men from killing the Americans. When wounded Captain Shields was unable to move. He or dered his soldiers to go forward and to leave him, but they declined and fought stubbornly until they were overpowered. Alabama Sian Tlilnk* HU Son Was Mur dered in Birmingham. John F. Barbour, of Thomasville, Ala., is in Birmingham investigating the death of his son, J. Ernest Bar bour, who was found in an unconscious condition in Avondale park a week ago from last Saturduy, and who died soon after. A postmortem examination showed that the young man’s death was caused by morphine end the theory of suicide largely obtained, but Coroner Paris, who investigated the case fully, came to the conclusion that Barbour may have been drugged for the purpose of robbery and that death resulted. Coming down the main walks from the Capitol to Pennsylvania avenue, in Washington, there are groups of three or four .steps that are very con fusing to the average pedestrian, and there Is a queer incident connected with their construction. For years there was a man about the Capitol who made the study of steps and per sons going up and down stairs a fad and a science. In watching crowds walking down the long approaches to the Capitol he discovered that by far a greater number of persons stumbled on those groups of steps than the record ought to show. The attention of the present Capitol architect was called to the matter, but he was incredulous at the idea. “Why,” said he, “Frederick Olmstead, the ar chitect, took especial pains with those group of steps, I know.” However, they watched the tricky groups of steps and discovered that it was real ly astonishing the number of persons who stumbled going up and seemed in clined to fall in descending, but they were utterly at sea for any explana tion. Olmstead went there later. The sub ject was brought to his attention and he went down to watch the steps him self. He was simply amazed at the way people behaved when they reach ed those steps. He said, “I can’t ac count for it. I spent weeks arranging the proportion of rise to tread for them. Wooden models of them were put down for use at my own place and I walked over them day after day till I felt sure they were perfect.” “Olmstead, isn’t one of your legs a trifle shorter than the other?” the step savant inquired. Olmstead was dumbfounded when it flashed on him that owing to the in equality in the length of his legs he had made steps to the Capitol that were suited only to people similarly afflicted. The Little Sister sod the Sbab. A pretty little story is told of the Shah of Persia's recent visit to Brug es. Hearing that a daughter of a cer tain Italian who was once a member of his suite had entered a convent at Bruges, he started out to find her. The young woman is a sister of charity attached to a small convent in one of the suburbs. The Shah had some dif ficulty in finding the young nun, but when he did find her he took both her hands in his and pressed them heart ily, saying that lie could not leave Belgium without having seen the daughter of his old friend. The young nun, who, it is said, is far from un comely, replied In Persian, much to the delight of the Shah. The nun was given permission to show her Oriental visitor the chapel and the garden of the convent where she had elected to spend her days, and he was so much Interested In her accounts of the work done by the sisters that on his depart ure he presented the order with 2,000 francs. __ The bund Is the name given In al most all eastern seaports to the street fronting on the water. They are Exported to All Parts at the World. “Very few people, except, perhaps, professional and amateur boatmen, are aware that American-made oars are the finest in the world," said a leading wholesale dealer In oars In New York to the Star writer —jcently. “At home and abroad, wherever there Is water and small boats are used, our oars are celebrated for their lightness, strength, durability and beauty of finish, and as many as 500,000 pairs, or about 0,- 000.000 feet of oars are manufactured in this country every year. Nearly two-thirds of the product Is sold to boatmen and fishermen living on the borders of the great lakes and sea coast towns and cities of the United States, and the rest is exported to England, Germany, Russia, France, Italy and Scotland. In all of these countries the superior qualities of our oars are, among oarsmen, freely ac knowledged, and in many of the for eign navies they are so highly esteem ed that they are either largely or ex clusively used. For instance, 6,500 pieces, or all the oars used on British war vessels, are purchased In this country. The next largest foreign buyers of our oars are the French and Italian governments, each of which has a standing order with a New York dealer to supply its uavy with 5,200 pieces annually. “American oars are made In twenty or twenty-five factories situated prin cipally in the western states east of the Mississippi River, where large forests furnish the best timber for their manufacture. Oars are made al most wholly by machinery, only a small amount of handwork being done in finishing them. There are three varieties of woods used In making oars. Those intended for working pur poses are made of an and oak in lengths varying from six to twenty four feet, while those used by people for pleasure are made of spruce In lengths varying from six to fourteen feet. Oars are sold by the length and are worth from four cents to fifteen cents per foot, according to the qual ity and finish of the article.”—Wash ington Star.
