POPULATION IS 70,295,220 Census Figures Have Doubled in Last Thirty Years. OFFICIAL REPORT MADE PUBLIC Growth For Last Ten Years Was Nearly i\ Per Cent—Figures by States For 1900. A Washington special says: The official announcement of tho total pop ulation of the United States for 1900 is 70,295,220, of which 74,62 7,907 are contained in the forty-five states repre senting approximately the popolula tion to be used for apportionment pur poses. There is a total of 134,158 In dians not taxed. The total population in 1390, with which the aggregate population of the present census should be compared, was 63,069,756. Taking the 1890 population as a basis there has been a gain in the popula tion of 13,225,464, during the past ten years, representiug an increase of nearly 21 per ceat. Bulletins will be issued fop the vari ous minor civil divisions in the differ ent states and territories as fast as possible. According to a dispatch from Nor folk, Va., the presidency of Washing lon and Lee university made vacant by the death of William L. Wilson, "ill be offered to ex-President Grover Cleveland.
