One lamentable fact abcut Winder is
the carelessness and indifference of its
public officials in looking after and en
forcing its sanitary laws. We have
been here eight years and have
never yet seen much interest manifest
ed on this line nor the ordinance, if
there be one, enforced.

School Entertinment.
Absence from the city prevented us
from being present last Friday uight to
witness the entertainment given by the
Winder Public School. The hall was
filled with spectators aud the occasion
was greatly enjoyed, and all present
say it was a great success.

The County School Commissioner ask
us to state that the Board request teach
ers to exhibit license, contract with
patrons, etc. Remember also that Dec.
27th is the dav for making contracts for
the year ISOI. Every teacher will be
requested to ba 1 1 the Courthouse at
Jefferson that day.

The Thursday Afternoon Thimble
Circle met at the borne .of Mrs. Annie
Carithers and spent an enjoyable after
noon. There can be no doubt about the
Thimble Circle being in earnest, as
there were a number of the ladies pres
ent not withstanding the inclement
weather. The Thursday Afternoon
Thimble Circle will meet at the homes
of Mesdumes Stongh and Jones on
Broad street All the members are
urgently requested to be present as busi
ness of importance will be discussed.

Leaves Tomorrow.
Mr. S. P. Spiegel closed his work as
pastor of the Chfistian church at this
place last Sunday. The church here
was very much attached to him
and highly pleased with his labors, No
pastor has a warmer place in the hearts
of his members than Brother Spiegel,
and all wish for him a long and useful
life. He will leave tomorrow aud has not
definitely decided yet where he will lo
cate another year as he has several calls
in different states.
Mr. H. D. Jackson reached home Mon
day from South Georgia and will re
main uutil after Christmas, He is look
ing natural, but of course there will be
much improvement in his looks after a
few days stay in Winder and breathing
some pure air and drinking some sure
enough water. This is the big advan
tage we have over South Georgia, Mr.
Jackson’s many friends here were de
lighted to see him and shake his hand
again,

Judge Bradbury and family moved
back to his farm from Jefferson Wed
nesday. He will be at Jefferson him
self, however, until the Ist of January.
We are glad to have him back on this
side of tile county as bis home i$ only
three miles from Winder. Judge Brad
bury has made a good and conscientious
ordinary and will leave several thous
and dollars in the treasury for another
year. He has not had to borrow any
money for county expenses this year,
and this is perhaps the first year in 30
or more, but that the county has had to
borrow.
The Gainesville, Jefferson & Southern
railroad will sell Christmas holiday
tickets to everybody December 22nd,
23rd, 24th, 25th, and also December 30th
and 31st, 1900, aud January Ist, 1901,
good until January 4th. inclusive.

Rev. Thos. Chapman reached home
yesterday from his South Georgia tour
as State Superintendent of Missions of
the UniTersalist churoh in Georgia. He
has been away about six On the
2d Sunday in this month he dedicated
the beautiful rew* church at Americus.
Georgia, just completed, at a cost of
$2500 00 or more Mr. Chapman has
been called to serve this church but will
not leave Winder if he accepis.
Mr. aud Mrs. R. U. Wright, who re
cently moved here from Paradise, had
born to them a little girl last Sunday
night. Richard was raised here and
known by all of our people and has been
receiving the congratulations of his
many friends all the week. *
