Prepared to Preach •
Sometimes preachers may go into their
pulpits unprepared to preach, but certainly
tin. old negro who uttered the prayer pub
lished below did not desire to go before his
flock without being properly armed and
equipped. If bis prayer was answered the
cohorts of sin must have been utterly routed
on that occasion:
0, Lawd, give Thy servant this morning
the eyes of the eagle and the wisdom of the
owl, connect his soul with the gospel tele
phone iu the central skies, laminate his brow
with the sun of Heaven, plzeu his mind with
love for de people, turpentine his imagination,
grease ids lips with ‘possum oil, loosen his
tonga with the sledge hammer of Thy power,
’lectrify his brain wid de lightnin’ of de
word, put 'petual motion in his nlims, till him
plum full of the dynamite of Dy glory, 'uoint
him all over wid de kerosene oil of D.v sal
vation and sot him oil tire. Amen.

Question
How to farm under boll weevil condi
tions is a knotty problem, hut it s ems that
there is one farmer in this section that lias
learned how to get ahead of the pest and to
make money in spite of it. The I.awreneeville
News-Herald, in writing of the farming op
erations of Mr. J. lb Whitworth, says that
he is in good circumstances, farm paid for,
a nice, comfortable home to live in, good
barn and outbuildings, crib full of corn, plen
ty of fodder, an abundance* of bay, partic
ularly alfalfa, hams, side meat and shoul
ders hanging in the smokehouse, wheat both
ground and unground; in fact all of the nec
essary tilings to be found on tin* farm. \es,
even money in tin* bank, and doesn't owe a
human being a dollar in the world. And,
strange to relate, he lias not planted nor al
lowed anyone else to plant a cotton seed on
his farm in twelve years. We Georgians
have been thinking all along that to attempt
to farm in this state without planting most
of our lands in cotton was to invite bank
ruptcy and starvation. Possibly we have
heel, mistaken. A little thought along tins
Une might help the farmers in their opera
tions in the future.

A COMMENDABLE ACT.
On last Monday at a meeting of the
bride’s Club, a very live organization
if this city, a substantial donation was
made to Red Cross work in tills city
and county. By this act the Brides
club lias shown a very real interest in
one of tlie most important enterprises
that this city and county has in its
midst. The conservation of the health
of the people is one of the biggest ques
tions that confronts us today, and our
people should endeavor by all means
possible to continue in our midst tlie
work of the Public Health Nurse, Mrs.
Worsham, and to lend her all needed
aid in the prosecution of the work. By
tills contribution the Bride’s Club Ims
called attention to this work in a very
substantial way, and we are sure that
,ther organizations in our city will be
ry glnd to lead their aid and encour
agement towards keeping tlie Public
Health Nurse in our eitv and county.

SCHOOL IS FINISHED.
By Ermine McElroy.
I’ve giggled for nine long months.
And studied the mountains and plains,
And listened to switches and rules.
That have made tears amid clouds and
rain.
V
I’ve written many notes and papers,
Of knowledge and silly tilings.
I've thrown chalk from board to board
And caught it again and again.
And now for the pleasures of summer,
The trees, the blossoms and tilings.
The birds that make me so happy,
Are now my pleasures again.

Doctor, Lawyer,
Banker-
After an automobile accident you
may need a doctor, lawyer and a
banker.
A doctor to patch up the victim.
A lawyer to attend to his claims.
A banker to furnish you the luon
cyey to pay the damages.
All these demand money—much
more than we ask for a Travelers
Automobile Policy, which pays these
expenses for you.

Methodists Report
Progress.
The second quarterly conference of
tlie year for the Winder Methodist
church was held last Friday at the par
sonage. Dr. W. T. Hamby, wlio was
in the chair, proved to be a strong pre
siding officer, and an unusually large
number of tlie officials of the church
( were present. Tlie Presiding Elder
congratulated the church on its'Sunday
j school record, this school now being
j conceded to be (lie largest in the dis
j trict. The men's work also came in for
praise, the statement being made that
there was much more interest, in this
.department tlum there bad ever been
!in tlie history of the church. All local
finances were reported to l>e in full and
the encouraging report was made of
the grant of $5,000 from the church ex
tension board, to the new Sunday
building. Anew Epworth
League has been organized during the
quarter, and 27 new members have
been received iflto church fellowship
during the year. Increased congrega
tions and a renewal of interest in ev
ery department of Church effort was
noted. The Boy's department and the
Beginners’ were among those who show
ed remarkable gains. Brief talks were
made on the coming Educational Cam
paign in which Southern Methodism is
hoping to raise 33,000,000 for her
schools and colleges. The quota for
the Winder church is $8,407, and if
Winder Methodism fails in this under
taking if will he the first time in many
days that the church lias not succeed
ed in going “over the top.”

Why Many
Don’t Save—
Saving money, you will find, is not
wholly a Dollars-and-Cents matter.
This statement may sound strange,
but it is true.
Saving money is, first of all a Brain
and Backbone matter. And this is
just the reason why so many people
who make money can’t save any of it
—they don’t think and have little
self-control.
Happily, however, there are very
few who cannot learn the necessary
lessons, if they will.
The time to start is TODAY, and
the place—THlS BANK. We’ll help
by adding 5 per cent interest, com
pounded annually.
