THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER I*. HWI A MESSAGE FROM The WINDER NEWS This is a message to our subscrib ers. We know it is fair and that everyone that takes the News will agree with us in the statements we make. On account of the stringency in money matters, we have not press ed our subscribers for payment thru the summer months. By the clos est economy we have managed to puli through so far, yet we are go ing to need every dollar due us ear ly in the fall. We are expecting you to pay us just as soon as you begin to sell your cotton. We have given you a good, readable paper, and we feel sure you appreciate our efforts and that you will be willing at the first opportunity to show your apprecia tion by sparing us the small amount you owe the paper.- The amount is not large to anyone, but these small amounts put together mean a great deal to us. The label on your paper shows the date to which you are paid. If te date opposite your name reads 2 lapr2l, it means that your sub scription expired on April 21, 1921, and that you are due us for the par per from that date. There is not a family in the county but what is e to take their county paper. It costs about 3 cents a copy, and we believe everyone in the county feels that it is worth this small sum to • able to keep up wit the happen ings of this county and section. We are expecting you to help us and to help us early. We need it. The first time you are in town come around and see us and let’s talk over the matter. We want to give you a good paper but we cannot do so un less we can collect, the subscriptions due us. THE WINDER NEWS and Barrow Times S. A. L. Schedule ii -: In Effect May Ist, 1921. South Bound. Patterson, vice pres ident of the Fourth National Bank of Macon, delivered an address last week in Macon which was full of flue thoughts. They are worth the atten tion of every banker and merchant in the country. He said: “Credit men of the big banks count the amount of advertising a merchant does as one of his assets. No bank wants to lend money on merchandise in the fall that should have been sold in the spring, and I know of nothing that reflects the business tactics and methods of merchandising better than a careful analysis of advertising. It may lx* an article or it may be a ser vice, but it requires salesmanship and salesmanship requires advertising.” “My impression is that a majority of people have wrong conceptions of what advertising is. Most of them seem to think unless you have a special article to place on the market, such as a can of tomatoes or some cotton goods, that advertising is not essential. I do not believe that this is the case, for my opinion is that advertising is sales manship, and that salesmanship is ad vertising. Banks were the last large interests to take up advertising, feeling that it was not dignified, or rather this was a feeling of the old school, hut the re verse condition exists today, and I know of no institution or business that spends more money on advertising titan the banks. Having always been a"h enthusiastic believer in the proper form of advertising I did not feel it a difficult task to make a few remarks on this subject, having been connected with credit in financial institutions fot many years, and having analyzed ev ry conceivable asset, but this is' the first occasion that I have ever had to consider advertising as a business asset, hut the more thought to this subject the more essential I find it. “In analyzing overhead expenses and disbursements the p-oper credit man sees to it that due apportionments are made for expenses, and advertising is not overlooked. We must not overlook that we all have something to sell It may be an article or it may be a ser vice, but it requires salesmanship, and salesmanship requires advertising." -—' ” Needless Advice.
