THURSDAY. OCTOBER 6. 1921. FINE WORDS FROM A BIG BANK MAN ,<lr George E. Patterson, vice pres ident of the Fourth National Bank of if aeon, delivered an address lust week in Macon which was full of fine thoughts. They are worth the atten tion of every hanker and merchant in the country. lie said: “Credit men of the big banks count 'he amount of advertising a merchant does as one of his assets. No bank wants to lend money on merchandise in the fall that should have been sold in the spring, and I know of nothing that rell cts the business tactics and methods of merchandising better than n /careful analysis of advertising. It may be an article or it may he a ser vice, but it requires salesmanship and salesmanship requires advertising.” “My impression is that a majority of people have wrong conceptions of what advertising is. Most of them seem to think unless you have a special article to place on the market, such as a can of tomatoes or some cotton goods, that advertising is not essential. 1 do not believe that this is the ease, for my opinion is that advertising is sales manship. and that salesmanship is ad vertising. Banks were the last large interests to take up advertising, feeling that it was not dignified, or rather this was a feeling of the old school, but the re verse condition exists today, and 1 know of no institution or business that spends more money on advertising thau the banks. Having always been an -enthusiastic believer in the proper form of advertising I did not feel it a •difficult task to make a few remarks on his subject, having been connected with credit in financial institutions for many years, and having analyzed ev ry conceivable asset, but this is tl.e first occasion that I have ever had to onsider advertising as a business asset, but the more thought to this subject the more essential 1 find it. “In analyzing overhead expenses anrt disbursements the p"oper credit man safe to it that due apportionments are made for expenses, and advertising is not overlooked. We must not overlook that we all have something to sell If may be an article or it may be a ser vice, but it requires salesmanship, and salesmanship requires, advertising.” Foot-Rule for Matrimony. The trouble with most marriages If that a man always makes the mistake of marrying the woman who carries film off his feet—lnstead of trying to find one who keeps him on them. —Los Angeles Express Latitude of Ukraine.
