General Conference
Closet Great Session
(L. W. Collins)
The general conference of the M. E.
church South which meets every four
years has Just closed an epochal ses
sion at Hot Springs. In addition to
the election of live new Bishops, impor
tant legislation was enacted that will
affect the life of the entire church. The
reports made of the work of the quar
(lrenninum show the largest increases
in membership ever made by this
church, the two Georgia conferences
leading the entire connection. Finan
cial reports also showed great increases
in spite of the country-wide depres
sion.
One of the features of the conference
WII.' the appointment of a commission
with full powers to negotiate unifica
tion with the northern Methodist and
the Protestant Methodist churches.
Judge Candler of Atlanta swept the
conference from its feet, when amid
scenes of unparalleled enthusiasm, lie
made the motion to appoint this com
mittee. Another surprise was given
the delegates when the representative
of the United Brethren church asked
for admission into this fellowship,
stating that the aims and doctrines of
the two churches were very closely
akin. If this merger is affected, it will
bring into one group over eight million
people, being the largest single prot
estant organization in the world.
To emphasize the oneness of world
Methodist, fraternal delegates from
Canada, England, Japan and Australia
xvere heard. Two great addresses were
given by Dr. S. B. Butcher of the Wes
leyan church of England and I)r. Da
vid Downey of the Northern Methodist
church; also the speech of the repre
sentative of the African Methodist
church was given an enthusiastic hear
ing. The Georgia delegates were prom
inent in the deliberations of the body.
Mr. John Holder being appointed chair
man of the rules committee. Dr. J. E.
Dickey being elected Bishop and Rev.
T. I>. Ellis being elected to the impor
tant chairmanship of the church. Ex
tension Board. On the committees
were several prominent Georgians in
cluding C. C. Jarrell, W. P. King, W.
A. Shelton, J, H. Baker and Bascom
Anthony.
The confe/ence, as is well known, is
a delegated body consisting of an equal
number of preachers and laymen who
are elected by the annual conferences.
The district conferences elect the lay
delegates to the former body, and the
church conference appoints the dele
gates to the district, so that a purely
democratic system is secured. It is
not so generally known that the Bish
ops are stationed for four years just
like the preachers, and arc absolutely
under the direction of the general con
ference.
Anew feature of thits session was
the appointment of resident mission
ary Bishops who will remain for the
four year terms in their foreign head
quarters, directing the work of these

\V. B. Beauchamp "ill go to ISrussells,
Belgium, to have the oversight of the
important European work; Bishop S.
it. Hay goes to Shanghai, China, Bish
op Hoyt M. ltobbs to San Paulo. Bra
zil and Bishop H. A. Bonz goes to
Seoul, Korea, Manchurian mission. All
of these four were elected Bishop at
the pvesent session of the conference.
Bishop J. E. Dickey, whose father
has preached in this section, xx ill be
stationed in Texas. Bishop W. A. Ains
xvorth, formerly of Macon, xvill return
to South Georgia. Bishop Candler,
while retaining his residence In At
lanta, will have charge of the Louis
iana. Virginia and Baltimore confer
ences. Most important to the Method
ists of this section is the fact that Bish
op W. B. Murruh. of Memphis, will have
charge of the North Georgia confer
ence for the next four years. Bishop

graduating from Southern University
in 1K74. He served as president of
Milsaps college. Jackson. Miss., for sev
eral years, being elected Bishop in
1010.
Two cities are contending for the
next conference, one of the sc being
Dallas. Texas, and the other Savannah.
Ga., which is the cradle of Methodism
in America. The conference abolished
tlie four-year time limit for its preach
ers, this making ail ideal arrangement
as the preachers arc still appointed by
the year, and yet may be retained
for longer terms tlinn at present by eott
sent of t lie Bishop cabinet and both
church and pastor arc in favor of con
tinuing these relations. A strong en
dorsement was made of the Eighteenth
amendment and of the peace policies of
ex President Woodroxv Wilson. Anoth
er interesting feature of this confer
ence was the fact that for the tirst
time women served as delegates, and
took part in the debates.

Lumbago
This is a rheumatism of the muscles
of the back. It comes on suddenly and
is quite painful. Every movement ag
gravates the disease. Go to lied, keep
quiet and have Chamberlain’s Liniment
applied and a quick recovery may be
expected. Mrs. F. J. Daun, Brockport,
X. Y., writes: “I can honestly say that
Chamberlain's Liniment cured me of
lumbago a year ago last summer. When
I began using it, I was flat on my back
in bed and could not turn to the left or
right. 1 had a bottle of Chamberlain’s
Liniment in the house and this was ap
plied to my back. It promptly drove the
pains and aches away. Advt,
