O Some times we call a fellow shrewd who is only dishonest. O Self-pity weakens us. Never let it find a place In your mind. O The time lias come for you to borrow your neigh bor's lawn mower. O Question: Can a man have a telephone in his home and remain good natured? O We can become anything,, within reason and com mon sense, which we desire to become. O Love begets love; faitli generates faith; lofty lives nourish the germs of exalted life in others. There is a spiritual birth. John was tin* successor of the spir it of Elias. Luther was the offspring of the mind of Paul. We are the children of Abraham if we share In the faith of Abraham ; we are the successors of the Apostles if we have a spirit similar to theirs. —F. W. Robertson. O Criticism Is Helpful. It ill becomes those in authority to resent criticism. All puUUc officials should realize that they are the servants of the people, and that tin* public has a right to criticise everything they do. it does not help these officials to run to courts when they are criticised and endeavor to prosecute their critics. Ev en if these critics are mistaken it is better to he pa tent and explain everything so that the people can understand and rattier than to resent criticism with court prosecutions of libel. 1899 1923 When Will You Get Your Money Back . .The investor who looks at the interest return alone, without knowing how or when his principal will be re turned, is sacrificing the substance for the shadow —he is guarding the chaff and forgetting the wheat. Ask our advice at any time. We will give you our honest, earnest and sincere opinion about any financial matters in which you may be interested. Your savings or your surplus money deposited with us will be absolutely safe and convenient. National Bank Mother’s Day. Next Sunday has been designated as “Mother’s Day." Of All human names among men, there is none greater than "Mother.” Every human being should give homage to this matchless name. It has molded kingdoms, revolutionized empires, civilized and christianized heathen nations, and peopled earth and heaven. Mother is first in every noble work, Tin* infant nestles in her bosom with joy, the child, hurt in its play, flies to her arms for refuge, and tin young man or woman, halting on the brink of ruin, turns to a life of rectitude and usefulness in answer to her prayer. Sin- was last at the cross, .first at the sepulchre and the only one to bathe the Master's feet in tears. She exemplifies more than another human being the spirit of the Christ,, in that she is ready at all times to make any sacrifice for those she loves. Let us. then, on next Sunday, give her that homage that is due her great and holy name. O- A Creamery For Winder. Tin re is a splendid opportunity just now for Win der to secure a creamery for this county and section. One of the city’s splendid citizens proposes to build and operate a creamery if cream enough will be fur nished by the farmers to keep it running. There is no use in talking about diversified farming until a market is secured for other products besides cotton. If Harrow county is to turn Its attention to cows, hogs, and chickens, there must be a market secured for the products of these lines of business. The creamery will furnish a market for the products of the cow. We must not let this opportunity pass by. We suggest that the Chamber of Commerce take up this matter at once and put it over. Creameries are paying in other sections, why not Barrow coun ty? Let’s have the creamery. O Heavy Burdens THE annual income of the United States in 1910 was thirty billion dollars. It is now estimated at fif ty billion. We have nearly doubled our income in ten years. But in 1910, the government levied only B per cent taxes for meeting the expenses of govern ment. Now it is levying 10 per cent,, more than three times as much. Why is this? Because we are now spending on preparations for war alone more than we spent teu years ago on all branches of government. We are squandering our money on preparations for war and because of this insane idea among our political lead ers we are forced to levy taxes beyond precedent and even beyond the ability of our people to pay. There is literally not a branch of industry or business on which the restoration of prosperity depends that is not practically paralyzed today by taxes. What is true in the United States is true in all the nations of the world. The nations of the earth are destroying themselves preparing for "war. It looks very much like the nations of the world need men with some sense at the head of their affairs. O If bandits wait until we travel in China to kidnap us we'll never be kidnapped. O Avery disgusting thing is for a married couple to try to settle their disputes in the presence of others.
