It seems to be the fashion now
adays to affirm that, compared
with their mothers, girls are friv
olous over-fond of pleasure and
make little effort to fit them
selves for the duties that will he
theirs in a few years as wives
and mothers. A correspondent
of the New; York World writes in
this pessimistic vein: “The ma
jority of girls have nothing more
on their minds than the pursuits
of Measure in all its forms. Flir
tations and breaking men’s hearts
are their usual pastimes. Asa
general rule not one girl out of
a hundred is like her mother
usjed to* be.” *
This is but a sample of the
“knocks” which, apparently,are
popular. Those who lament the
attitude of mind of young girls
deal in superlatives and probably
say much more than they really
mean. To say that not more than
one girl out of every hundred has
the good qualities of her mother
is a statement that surley is al
together too broad. Were there
no Flirtations and no men’s brok
en hearts in our mothers’ days?
When were our mothers’.days,
anyway? Were they not in the
seventies and eighties? Is that
so long ago that there has been
time for a great revolution in the
minds of girls? May it not be
true that much of the love of
pleasure, that was our mothers’
is forgotten in our love and
reverence for them? May it not
be true that the frivolities of the
girls of today are so near us and
those of the girls of a generation
ago so far away in the past that
the former suffer by comparison?
The girls of today are the moth
ers of tommorrovv. The mothers
of tommorrow not only will rock
the cradle with the hand that
“rules the world,” but will actu
ally through medium of the ballot
have a more direct influence in
the affairs of the world. The
outlook for the next few gener
ations is said if ninety-nine of ev
ery hundred daughters are but
poor imitations of their mothers.
Although but to break the mo
notony of the chorus of lament
directed at the girls of to-day,
there seems to be a chance to say
something in their favor. For one
thing,because they’re better edu
cated, they will be better able to
teach their children, They have
greater opportunities to learn hoi
to safeguard their children from
disease. It is true that there is
a freer spirit among girls now
than formerly. Many of the con
ventions, once rigorously observec
have fallen ini/) disuse. But be
cause there is a greater spirit of
independence among girls it does
not follow that only one out of
a hundred of them is as good an
sweet as her mother was in her
girlhood.—Sfairannah News. ■
