A Plain Statement.
Somebody in town is selling
Electric Bitters, and that same
somebody is selling Electric Bit
ters knowingly as a beverage.
Dozens of empty bottles lying
around on the lot between the
'News office and the warehouse
and Gainesville Midland railroad
bear mute evidence to this indiet
tralent.
Technically-the sale of "bitters
containing 18 per cent alcohol
may not he a violation of Georgia
prohibition statute, hut the man
who would make the sale know
ing that hitters were to he used
t‘S a beverage, would sell beer or
Whisky if he urfere not a coward
before the law.
Verily, verily, h>ve of money
makes hypocrites of mortal man
and greed and love of gain
chokes and causes to perish that
which should have full sway in
the breasts of mankind.

the appearance of your place so
that its looks compensate you for
the trouble and expense even if
your health was not improved as

Let everybody have a general
cleaning up of their premises for
the spring and summer, and keep
them clean. It rests with tin*’indi

Editor Jerome Jones in a well
written editorial makes it plain
that Sunday “movies” are not
backed by the working people of
Atlanta. He tells those behind
the Sunday show movement: You
shall not debauch and profane la
bor on a cross of greed. No,
and they should not he allowed 0
“crucify” the law' in the name of
charity. ll.il.
This inanidolatry pursues milita
ry heroes and political heroes and
religious heroes, and other kinds.
Great men are blessings, “fire
pillars’’ in the dark pilgrimage
of mankind. Such should he rev
erenced. They lift themselves,
like mountains, far above the fair
roundings—prophetic tokens * r
the possibilities of human nature.
But in the political World there
is a a manidolatry that seems
strange. In a government libi
ours eat-h voter is supposed to
think for himself and work >ut
from his brain the patli of duty.
Yet sometimes men seem to dele
gate to another their indepen
dence of thought and accept his
dotations and follow his paths
whithersoever they lead. They
will offer themselves as sacrific
es on the altars of the Baals of
discord and destruction.
We all know the story of the
bell-wether and thy* flock. The
The flock exhibits chivalrous d<
votnn in their blind following.
Hold a stick before the bell-weth
er and lie. by necessity, leaps over
it : withdraw‘-the stick and all
the flocjc fvill yault over air. So
men endowed with reason, with
Vision to see act blindly, and see
not.
Men choose a political idol and
follow astray into his errors. The
dictation of the master is reoievec
on all questions as if he were in
spired. 11 is opinions are quoted
as if authoritative, and it is
treason to question them. The
worshippers seem to live to glori
fy their idol. Yet men who thus
surrender their individualities
pity the heathen who worship
idols of wood and stone The
idolitary of the heathen ■ may he
1 ss harmful. Their “idols have
mouths, hut they speak not; eyes
hut they see not. ears hut they
hear not; feet they have, but
they walk not.neither speak they
through their throats.’’ These
healthful gods are harmless. They
cannot lead their worhsippers as
tray.
We send missionaries to China
and they wean men from the ah
surb worship of idols made with
hands. But who can wean a man
from his worship of his political
hero? He is joined to his idol
and has to be let alone.
Reverence and respect are due
to those who are truly great. They
are as said, “fire-pillars,” hut
men should preserve their indi
viduality. If the bell-wether
jumps high and clears the stick
before you valt, look and see with
your own eyes if the stick is re
moved.

Many Winderites were hunting
holes Wednesday night. It is
said storm pit rent was at a pre
mium. Just after reading the
accounts of the fearful calamities
befalling the west and the middle
west as the result of storms and
floods, rain and wind like that we
had Wednesday night was not
very soothing.
Not in several years have death
jhml disaster cut so wide and
tragic a swath through this coun

tlit> middle west. Cyclone and tor
nado have alternated with flood
and freshet in wiping out human
lives and precipitating vast prope
