ASSASSIN WAS ARRESTED
Only One Shot Was Fired Hut I hit?
Passed Through the Heart of the
Kind, Causing Death In a Short
Time.
King George of Greece was assassi

Saloniki. The assassin was a Greek of
low mental type who gave his name
as Aleke Schinas. He shot the king
through the heart.
The king was accompanied only by
an aide de camp, Lieutenant Colonel
Francoudis. The assassin came sud
denly at the king and fired one shot
from a 7-chamber revolver. The trag
edy caused intense excitement. Schi
nas was seized immediately and over
powered.
The wounded king was lifted into a
cariage and taken to the Papafior
hospital. He was still breathing whet
placed in the carriage.
Prince Nicholas, the king’s third
son, and other officers, hurried to the
hospital. Arriving first, Prince Nich
olas summoned the officers, and
speaking to them in a voice choked
with sobs, said:
“It is my deep grief to have to an
nounce to you the death of our belov
ed king, and invite you to swear fidel
ity to your new sovereign, King Con
stantine.”
Crown Prince Constantine, who suc
ceeds King George, is at present at
Janaina.
The assassin of the king is an evil
looking fellow, about 40 years of age
On being arrested he refused to ex
plain his motive for the crime. Hi
declared his name was Aleke Schinas
and in reply to an officer who asked
him whether he had no pity for his
country, announced that he was
against governments.
King George was in his 68th year
and had ruled fifty years. He was a
brother of Queen Mother Alexandra
of England and a son of the late kinp

FATAL STAGE DUEL.
Baritone and Tenor Fight Over Wo
map While Singing "Carmen.”
The stage of the little theater at
Argamasilla De Alba, in the province
of Ciudad Real, Spain, was the scene
of a duel to the death.
The opera was “Carmen.” The bari
tone Padro took the part of Don the
Toreador Escamillo, and the tenor
Martinez filled the role of the Don
Jose. Between the singers there was
intense rivaly over a love acair, and
they resolved to settle their differences
with the sword.
They decided, however, to defer the
combat until the end of the season.
This closed with “Carmen” and the au
dience was horrified when a real duel
was interpolated in the third act. The
men fought savagely, and Martinez
received a sword thrust from which he
rapidly succumbed.
SHOT AT CHURCH.
North Carolinian Killed While Attend
ing Services.
Called out of church by an usher
while attending divine services at
Waynesville, N. C., Henry Sorrells
walked into a fusillade of bullets, fired
by his cousin, Hardy Sorrels. Three
of the bullets took effect, the victim
dying almost instantly in front of the
church.
Witnesses state that no words
passed between the two men prior to
the shooting. They assert that Hardy
Sorrells began firing as soon as his
cousin appeared in the doorway of the
church. It is reported that the killing
is the aftermath of a violent quarrel
between the two men several weeks
ago. The slayer was arrested about
two hours after the killing and lodged
in the county jail. He refuses to make
any statement.

BRYAN TOOK NO PART
In Closing of Gambling Houses at
West Palm Beach.
Positive denial was made at West
Palm Beach, Fla., of the story that
William Jennings Bryan, secretary of
state, had forced Governor Trammel
to close the many gambling houses al
leged to exist there. The story of
Bryan’s reported intervention came
from New York, and quoted a numbei
of gamblers, who recently returned to
that city from the southern resorts, as
saying that one of Bryan’s western
friends lost $50,000 in a "fixed” gam
bling game, complained to Bryan
about it, and that Bryan at once urged
Governor Trammel to close the gam
bling places.
The crusade being waged against
gambling at present, it was authori
tatively stated, was undertaken at
Governor Trammel’s suggestion, the
governor having acted solely upon the
complaints made to him by the Lav
and Order league.
