Randolph Rose, Atlanta's Jew
ish contribution to Chattanooga's
home-wrecking brigade, is flood
ing the mails with offers of free
whisky to all old soldiers who
will attend the reunion and call
upon him. Long have we believed
that the reunions of the old vet
eran heroes were being commer
cialized and run in the ground
various cities using tin* occasion
to advertise themselves and their
advantages.
Xow. when this home wrecker
and life destroyer places an ex
tra quart of his poison at the con
inand of visiting veterans, it is
a safe prediction that this reunioi
will be the “wettest of the wet"
reunions the old soldiers have yet
enjoyed.
Many of the men who faced
shot and shell on the battlefield
cannot face the bottle. We have
seen them reeling around at these
reunions—the last fading flowers
of Lee’s army many of them —
and yet under the influence oi J
booze, made spectacles of them
selves.
Some may say that we are not
in favor of the soldiers having a
“good time” while renewing
friendships of the war-time days.
But it is not so. We want these
grand old men of the sixties, glo
rious old heroes that they are,
to lead sober lives. Let their de
clining days be their bravest am
best, and let them go down to
their graves carrying the wounds
of war with them, true to their
convictions and loyal to the Lost
Cause. But don't let them become
living, walking, falling advertise-
I ments of “Roses Impurity.”
At a recent meeting of the New
Jersey State Brewers’ Assoeiatioi
in the city of Newark, while i
dozen or more of the party were
seated at lunch, it was noticed
that none were served with alco
holic beverages, but drank vichy
or appollinaris instead. The som
what bumptious young president
of a New Jersey brewery came in
to the lunch room, and look in
over the table, remarked, “Is this
a Prohibition convention? I Wt>n’l
sit with such a crowd,” and he
took a seat at another table, and
promptly' ordered beer to be serv
ed. With a laugh the others cried
“We are sorry not to be good
enough company' for you, Gus,
but all at this table are on the we
ter wagon.” !
It developed in the Jersey City
Courts that this same “Gus,” in
selling real estate in the neigh
borhood of his home, incorporates
a strict Prohibition clause in the
title deeds. Ilis company owns
hundreds of beer saloons, and
places them 'near the homes of
poor men, but he takes good care
that nobody" shall pLace such nu
siances where they can offend his
family.—New Jersey" Issue.
Total Abstinence is certainly
personal prohibition,and personal
prohibitionists ought to vote for
national prohibition. It is the
moderate drinker that supports
the saloon, sustains the brewery
and the distillery, and breeds the
degenerate that fill our prisons,
our hospitals, poorhouses, and in
sane asylums. I have treated somt
5,000 inebriates in my profession
al career, all before without ex
ception were moderate drinkers,
