Will Leave June 20th—Ten Days
Recreation on the Atlantic
Ccast.
The local military expects to go
into camp at St. S|imcns Island
on June 20th, and will be there
for ten days. This will not be a
maneuver camp, but more of a
pleasure trip. The company will
have 40 men to go; or stay at
home.
Employers are asked to let the
members of the company off from
their duties to take this outing.
Expenses of the trip and per
diem will be paid by the govern
ment.
The entire Third battalion, com
prising the companies at Elberton
Winder and Lindale will go. The
company at Marietta will not at
tend, as it has been ordered dis
banded by the inspector. The
band of the first regiment is
assigned to the camp for this tour
of duty, and the Second squadron
of cavalry from Atlanta and
Gainesville will also go.
Cos. 11. is one of the best or
ganizations in the state, and Cap
tain Bondurant expects to carry a
full company, as the business men
will probably arrange to let the
boys off for this pleasure trip.

Contentment.
Each day we read of events
which appear to those concerned
as great misfortunes and all of

which do not become public prop

forgotten as they should be. We
lose the things we strive for only
to get something better if only
we are capable of putting the cor

Hon. William Robert Webb, 1 •
S. senator from Tennessee, teacher
and soldier, in an address before the
senate, made an appeal that the b<>\-
be protected from the curse of the
liquor traffic. We quote him from
the Congressional Record:
“My widowed mother, insight of
the smoke of distilleries, told me on
her knee that it was wrong to make
and sell liquor. 1 never went to a
teacher from my infancy to my
gia luation in a university who did
not teach me it was wrong to han
dle, touch or taste liquor. Asa
soldier boy in my teens I heard the
general order Gen. Roht. E. Lee
read at dress parade that liquor
brought to his army should be in
sealed paekaekes, put in charge of
the surgeons, and that the seal
should not he broken till the
wounded were actually on hand. It
was a sober army that made him
the most famous commander in his
tory and put his statue in Statuary
Hall bv the side of the Father of
His County. Mv Father in heaven
was good to me to give me such a
mother and such teachers and such
a commander. I reverence their
memory
“l have tried as a father, as a
grandfather, as a teacher, as a citi
zen, to transmit this great lesson to
those who are to come after me. I
am glad today as a senator of the
United States, that I have an op
portunity to make a record on this,
the greatest problem before the civ
ilized world. lam not a lawyer.
I cannot meet the legal arguments
of those learned lawyers on the
other side. I have the greatest re
spect for their learning and ability;
I covet today their equipment. I
can say, and Ido say. that, if the
constitution of the United States
stands in the way of this great re
form. the constitution ought to be
changed.”
In a Wisconsin town which has
been without saloons for some
time, a citizen was comparing the
present with the “good old days’’
when grog shops lured men from
their homes and their work. Said
the citizen:
Why, ten years ago when we had
saloons, there were at least seventy
five women in this town who daily
annoyed me to get my laundry work
to do, and now I can hardly find a
woman who will take in washings
at all. Since their husbands begun
work and since there are no saloons
for loafing purposes on the part of
the men, the women have become
so independent that one can scarcely
get a single one of them to scrub
offices, clean store windows or go
out and do house-cleaning.

Winder’s Husky Little Scouts
Win From Jefferson.
The youthful contingent of
Winder’s fandom is happy. The
ball team of the Boy Scouts were
invited to meet the Jefferson
Smuts Friday, ajid went over to
the Hub prepared to “get their
goat.” How well they succeeded,
was shown by the score when the
smoke of battle cleared away.
Winder's scouts were the victors
by a margin of three runs. the
score being 8 to 5 in their favor.
Both teams played good ball.
The locals got two three baggers
off the Jefferson pitcher, while
the Jefferson sluggers could only
sltovy one.
Below is the way Curtis Shep
ard, expresses it in poetic lan
guage :
“Winder and Jefferson got in a
fight,
Winder knocked Jefferson out
of sight,
Jefferson came back to V\ inder
town,
Winder told Jefferson she
would give her another round.
Jefferson got put in a big hay
stack,
The Scouts pulled up a cannon
and shot her in the back.
