Legislation at Forthcoming Ses
sion of General Assembly.
Atlanta. Ga., June IS. —If the
legislature which meets next
week gives serious consideration
to all measures involving prog
ress and improvement in state af
fairs, it will have little time this
year to divert itself and public
with freak measures. There is
every indication that the Georgi;
assembly this summer will have
its hands full of vital work, and
there seems to be a general dispo
sition among legislators to pre
pare for buckling down to hard
work from the very opening day
of the session. They know they
have a big program before them.
First of all in importance will
come the proposed revision of the
state financial system, coupled
with a movement for tax equalize
t.ion.
Gov. Thrown, in his outgoing
message, and Governor Slaton in
his inaugural address, will both
stress the necessity of working or
these lines.
The legislature will he asked
to appoint a special commission
to t ike up the whole proposition
of improving and bringing up t<
date Georgia’s penal system and
criminal court procedure. This is
a m -asure that has been endorse!
bv Judge Patterson of the St.it
Prison Commission, and by b ad
ing judges throughout th • state.
The compulsory education bill
Will be pressed before the assem
bly more vigorously than ever b
fore. One of the chief argument
will be the fact that Georgia ’
on * of only six states left in tin
i Union which has not already
■some kind of compulsory educa
! tion measure.
A host of other bills of gene
al and serious importance h.rv<
been prepared for introduction
One for instance, will require al
railroads to provide underpass
or overpasses under direction of
the railroad commission, but wii
be so framed as to try tom ak
it fair to the railroads as well as
j the public. Another will be to pu
‘the legislators on a straight sab
! ary basis instead of p-r diem and
to have biennial sessions.
In fact, the Georgia assembh
lis going to have to put on i
I thinking cap this summer.

(By Townsend Allen)
When the busy day is over with its
anxious hopes and fears,
And the telephone sto; s ringing and
the clerk disappears,
With a sigh I lean back weary in
my swinging office chair,
And my thoughts go back to child
hood and the old farm that is
there
I can see the dear old homestead,
broad and low beneath the trees
And the rows of shining milk pans
sunning in the fresh sweet
breezes;
I can see the barn and horses, and
the orchard on the hill,
Where we gathered golden pippins
for the old straw cider mill.
I can see the upland pastures dotted
o’er with {. razing sheep,
And the wheat fields waving golden,
ready for the men to reap,
I can see the old stone fences where
the chipmunks used to play.
And the cornfield and the meadow
with its piles of fragrant hay.
I can see the cattle standing ’neath
the willows 1 y the brook,
Where I used to fish for minnows
with a bent pin for a hook;
And the pond where grew the 1 i es
that my mother used to pr ze,
Ah, the light of heaven’s shining
now within those dear old eyes.
And 1 sigh while fancy lingers o’er
each well known pleasant scene
Ofthe happy days of h yhood thrown
by memory on the screen;
And I would give all I have gained
since, all my wealth and
treasurer rare,
To go hack one dav to childhood
and the old farm that is there.

Trapping A Lawyer.
In some cases counsel receive
answres to questions that they
l/ad no business to put, which,
if not quite to their liking, are
what they justly and serve. The fol
lowing story of George Clarke,
a celebrated minstrel, is a case
in the feint. On one occasion
when b* ing examined as a wit
n *ss, he was severely interrogated
by a lawyer.
“You are in the minstrel bus
iness, 1 believe?” inquired the
lawyer.
“Yes, sir,” was the reply.
“Is mot that a rather low call
ing?”
“L don’t know hut that it is,
sir,” replied the minstrel, “but, it
is s> much better than rny father’
that I am rather proud of it.”
The lawyer fell into the trap
“What was your father’s cull
ing?” he inquired.
“lie was a lawyer,” replied Mr
Clarke, in a ten * that sent the
