Fqrmer Waltonian Points Out
Rock on Which Editor Cald
well Flounders.
Following is a copy of a letter
sent to the Walton News for pub
lication this week from Dr. R. P.
Adams, of Ashburn, Turner coun
ty, Georgia, hut who up to about
two years ago was one of Walton
county’s leading physicians.
Ashburn, Ga., June ID, 191 J.
Editor Walton News; Monroe,Ga.
Dear Mr. Editor:- Have just
read this week's issue of the
News and 1 feel that 1 must re
ply to your article “ Does Geor
gia Need More New Counties'*.
Before replying, however, I wish
to giv.e my answer to the question
That answer is yes. Now,why?
You compare Georgia with a lot
of other states. As to Thxejs.
you know) that there are a lot of
■counties in that state that have
only a dozen or so inhabitants.
In/ fact, Texas is an empire in
r i({self. It is not settled up like
other states. The same may apply
to Kansas, Missouri, lowa,Nebras
ka, and others. As regards the
smaller states like Massachusetts,
South Carolina, Louisiana, Flor
ida and others, 1 wish to say that
they are not in Georgia’s class at
all. Why didn’t you say that
Rhode Island was about the size
of Gwinnett county? Why didtn't
you mention Delaware and New
Jer:<y? Why didn’t you mention
that Maine was a very small
state? Why didn’t you tell your
readers that Georgia is the Em
pire state of the South and the
largest stat eeast of the Missis
sippi and that she is a criterion
for other states? Why didn/’t
you? Does Georgia have to go
To other states to find out how
she should run her own business ?
We Georgians claim to be the
greatest people in the United
States. Just because some oth
er states cannot see the bene
fit of the creation of new
comities no reiuo;; why Georgia
should lag behind. I dare say that

in Georgia are a distinct behifit
to all concerned, that they will
follow our example.
You say that if Texas had as
•aaiiy counties iu propotion ,-s
Georgia, she would have more
than 1,000. Granted. And why
shouldn't she. She is big enough.
And when she gets as thickly set
tled as Georgia, 1 expect she
will create them. You also say
that Georgia has more counties
than any other southern stam
outside of Tbxas. Granted. Wby
shouldn’t she? She is the biggest
thing east of the Mississippi and
south of Mason and Dixon's
line as well. And. yet she hasn't
enough new counties. Not by
any means. Ask any man in this
section, where we have a num
ber of new counties, what tie
thinks of ttie idea. He will an
swer you and when lie gets
through, you will certainly wish
you hadn’t spoke. What is the
matter with you folks anyway?
Why do you oppose the creation
of Barrow County? I would like
for you to give me one valid rea
son. You certainly have not ad
vanced one as yet.
1 just Want to tell you, and you
can whisper this to as many as
you please, that it will he very
few South Georgia representa
tives that you will get to vote
against any new county proposi
tion. We have them down here
and we know; the good they do.
Better roads, more roadjs, smal
ler communities, business trans

and more easily handled, taxes no
higher, everybody satisfied. Do
you remember tin* time that you
were dickering for the purchase
of the Winder News? Do you?
Hester told me if you bought the
News, you would certainly “pull
for the new county for they
ought to have it ; but as long as
you were in Monroe you would
oppose it.
1 have never told this be
fore and would not do so now if
you Monroe newspapers hadn t
