Convention Meets in Atlanta
Next Month.
Atlanta. Ga., July 24. —The
chief topic of conversation among
the wholesale business houses of
Atlanta at present, is tb forth
coming Southern Merchants Con
vention which is to be held in
that city during the first tvv >
weeks in August. It is expected
that at least 4,000 southern mer
chants will attend.
These conventions which are
held in Atlanta during Febuary
and August each year, are a re
sult of the fact that at hat time
of the year many merchants are
in the city buying their spring
and fall stocks. The idea hack of
the convention is to take advan
tage of the presence of Hiese bus
iness men and discuss some of
the problems which confront the
indivdiual business man in the
south today. The Merchants and
Manafacturers Association of At
lanta, which has charge of the
arrangements for the convention,
has drawn up a program which
indicates that all merchants who
attend will spent not only an en
joyable time, but a profitable one
as well. There are over one hun
dred speakers expected and these
are drawn chiefly from tin* rank
of the merchants themselves.
There will be open parliment for
discussion a nd it is expected that
each, visiting merchant will re
turn to his big fall business with
one or more new ideas which will
be of material help to him.
Among the subjects which are
to be discussed are Diversity of
Crops, Credits and Collections
Selecting Help. Merchandising as
a Character Developer, Buying
Keeping S'ales I p and Stocks
Down, Special Sales and many
other topics of paramount import
ance.
The enertainment of the guest
has also been well provided for
and there will be barbecues, re
ceptions, luncheons, baseball and
theatre parties, etc., where the
merchants will be the guest of
the association al] through the
convention.

Trailing the Drunkard
Society is gradually forcing
good behavior on the inebriate,
| whether he wills it or not. One
of the most radical recent devel
opments is New York’s practice
of taking fingerprints of drunk
ards. The idea is that after
so many convictions for drunk
enness the subject will receive a
sentence on Blackwell’s island
If this method proves ineffectu
al, lie will be sentenced to the
city’s home for inebriates. now
in process of construction.
The point about the New York
plan is the fact that it illus
trates the awakening of society
to its duty to the man who drink?
not wisely but too well. The
old practice of treating the drunk
ard as a rowdy or a criminal is
passing. Today, we are handling

Civilization probably loses as
much to habitual and occasional
drunkenness as to many diseases
and the losses are distributed ov
er a wide area. For with the indi

in the new crusade against alco

altrustic nature.
Incidentally, a bill lias been in
troduced in the Georgia legisla
ture creating a home for inebri
ates and widening the power of
the state in dealing wi'li this
class. The only way to handle the
indigent inebirate now is to de
clare him insane and send him
to Milledgeville, or to gain his
consent to go there. The method
is clumsy and ineffectual. It
should be replaced by one that
is scientific and effectual.—At
