Master to the lawyer’s question

shou and be the rule of every one's
life and should not be forgotten
by the courts, the lawyers, the
judges and the juries in the
administrate of law: and the dis
pensation of justice. That God
should be taken into account in
everything, especially in the court
house.
lie took the position that the
judge, jurors, lawmakers and of
ficers of court should come with
clean hands in performance of
their respective duties, that
“andu 4 y’! was the watchword of
the hour, and performance of
duty in the court house legally,
fair y and impartially was the
call of God and the people.
The Judge stated that i: was
said of Abraham Lincoln —wheth-
er in his cabin in Kentucky or
Indiana, whether steering a flat
boat down the Mississippi river
or making rails in the forests
of Itllinois, whether a captain in
the K a'dihawk War or carrying
the village postoffice in his hat—
in whatever position he was call
ed he met every duty well. He
closed by saying that duty
called upon us all, first, to be
clean ourtlelves and to obey the
law of the land: second, to use
our inf uence that others might
obey and have respect for the
law of the land: third, to ac
complish these results that all of
us should obey ourselves not on

by man, but all the 'aws of God
His remark* on the “right to 1
live” were strong and impressive |
The Judge stated that God had
giv*m all human creatumJ tin*
right to live until they are r*-
moved to another sphere hy nat
ural or Providential causes, ex
cept by due process of law. J'lo*
oa.'le of the murder of the judge
sheriff, court c erk and juror,
and an innocent female hystandei
by a band of well-educated and
wealthy desperadoes in Virginia
was referred to in the judge’s
charge. He stated that such a
thing ought to produce a P 1 ’ 0 '
found and widespread reac
tion even among the lawless in
behalf of law and order; that the
who’e power of organized soci
ety was challenged and sought
to be destroyed and for the time
beijng it was destroyed, but that
later justice rose again and re
sfurned the adopter of power. He
further stated that the right to
live is the dearest heritage of
man. so ordained when (’ain kill
ed Ids brother Abel —emphasized
amid the thunder of Sinai, pro
claimed by the gospel and incor
porated in every civil code no
matter whether among the high
or the low, the rich or the poor,
the robust or the weak. Closing
by staying that man’s life at
h**v/t was of short duration, and
by saying: ‘‘As for man. his
days are as grass, as the flower
of the field so he flourisheth
For the wind passes over it and
it is not —th(> place thereof know
eth it no more.”
Further charging the Judge
said that the Athenians in
scribed upon ten pikers erected
<>ver ’heir ashes the names of
those who fell at -Marathon. The
spirit which animated them was
no purer or more elevated, nor
more patriotic than that which
moves judge, jurors, lawyers and
1 fi cel’s of court in a court of
justie to the full performance of
duty to our fello'V'-c.itizens.
The Judge excused himseli for
taki.ig up ho much tmie of the
court by stating in his conclud
ing remarks that what he had
said might open the door of hop**
and throw aside tin* gates of am
bition to some young man, poiu
and and leading him to the high
er ajnd better and holier life.
At the end of the Judge's
charge, considered by many the
finwf charge ever de’ivered in
Jackson’s court house. a ino‘i<n
was made and carried by a ris

upon the minutes of the court.
