Special News Man
Atlanta, Ga., Aug 27th.—The
public mind in and around Atlan
ta is normal today; the morbid
curosity crowd ,t lih t has been
hanging around the courthouse
situated at the corner of Pryor
and Hunter street id conspicious'-,
ly absent today. The verdict of
guilty, while a great surprise t'>
many, mee's the approval of a
large number of people. Various
reason l are given for the ver
dict. Prank sti 1 maintains his
innocence. The defense will
make a motion for anew trial
Which in all probability will be
granted—if not by the trial
Judge it will by the Supreme
Gourt of Georgia. Prejudice was
very, very high in this section du
ring the trial. A majority of
public sentiment undoubtedly be
lieves! Frank guilty. Hugh Dor
sey’s eloqu-nt, masterful and log
ical analysis of the evidence had
as much to do in producing the
verdict as every other element in
the ease. Dorwey acquitted him
self with distinguished ability.
The defense had two of the
ablest lawyers in the United
States . Dorsey was equal to
every emergency and resourceful
throughout the trial. Many in
telligent and conservative ob
servers who are entirely unbias
ed hope that something will yet
directly establish Prank’s guilt
before the day of his execution,
which, is October 10th. It can
be safely predicted, however,
that Prank will not hang on
the date named. There are a
large number of people, good
people, who honestly believe in
Prank’s innocence and are go-1
nig to try and get, anew trial
and they are more than likely to j
do so.
We spent Monday in your
thriving, hustling, growing cPy,
the guset of Dr. and Mrs. L. W.
Hodges. The Doctor showed us
about the city and did not fail
to show us every point of inter
est and material advantage Win
der has. We want to congratu
late the people of the prosperous
North Georgia metropolis. Our
better half reminded us of the
fact that we must not fail to
thank Airs. Hodges for the superb
dinner sin* treated us to remark
ing at tlie same time that slhe
believed Mrs. Hodges to be as
good a cook as she is. Ye bum
ble scribe proudly bears testimo
ny to the cooking ability of both
and we more than appreciate the
princely reception extended us
by those hospitable people. The
Georgia Senate did a wicked
thing when it failed to join the
house in giving you Winder peo
ple a Hew county and we suggest
that when the legislation meets
next summer that you borrow the
Atlanta spirit, (we believe you
ean get it) and try your fight
over. There is every reason why
you should have it. We are go
. ing to do our level best to help
you. Your resourees amply jus
tify your claims and your ambi
tion is laudable. We will hnvo
Barrow county yet.

Atlanta, Ga.. Aug. 2S—Believ
ing they saw a dead man walking
along the street, friends and
neighbors of J. B. Mathis of this
city fled shrieking in terror when
he appeared to them . When he
tried to approach his own cous

ground. Such* a true ghori story
Atlanta hasn't had in twen y
years.
J. B. Mathis is a popular trav

about once a month. Three or
four days ago the daily newspa

the notice of the funeral occurred
Then, one evening about twi
light, neighbors' sitting on thejr
porches along the block on Prvor
street on which Mr. Mathis board
ed, saw a familiar figure ap
proaching from the direction of
the railroad station.
“My God, it is Mathis” whis
pered somebody, and a general
panic followed. The explanation
was simple enough. There, were
two J. B. Mathises in Atlanta,
and it was thj* other man who
had died.
Escaped an Mule.
