The Fool Caught the Foods.
There was a half-witted youth
in Bridgetown to whom the neigh
boring farmers liked to offer a
penny and a nickel.
Gathered about him in a circle
on market day, the farmers, one
after another, would >liy:
“Now, which’ll yer have, Pe
ter? Here’s a cent —here is a
nickel —take your choice. ”
And fool Peter would invaria
bly choose the cent rather than
the nickel, and the farmers be
fore such incredible foolishness
would roar wi.li laughter, double
in two and slap their legs ncbfly,
with their brown hands. f
“Peter,” a man said one day
to the luna + ic, “why is it that
you always take the cent instead
of the nickel ?” t
Peter grinned a very cunning
grin.
“Hiippose T took the nickel,”
staid he, “would I <Ner get a
chance to take another one?” 2
