worm and Other Intestin
al Troubles.
Now that the schools are be
ginning to open up for the com
ing year's work, the State Board
of Health desires to call the at
tention of the parents and the
teachers of the State to the chil
dren examined at the very out
set for the presence of hookworm
so tlrat those children who are af
fected may he freed of the in
fection and thereby enabled to
do their work properly and also
to keep them from spreading the
diseases to healthy children. The
Board will take pleasure in send
ing boxes, for sending specimens
.to any sehool requesting them.
With each of these packages
there will be printed circulars
giving detailed directions as
to how the specimen is to be col
lected so all the teachers will be
required to do is to distribute the
the boxes among the pupils. In
case of an entire school or a
large number of students we will
send tins and request that they
be returned in quantities of from
10 to 50, by express. Do not
send them thru the mail. Ijf th<
the individual or teacher prefers
a regular mailing case will be
sent. Kindly let us know which
you wish. If the specimen on ex
amination in the laboratory of
the Board shows the presence of
hookworms or other intestinal
parasites a report, stating the
type of worm will he mailed to
the sender, who can then show
the report to his or her physician
and he treated for the disease.
The examination of a good many
schools has shown the entire en
rollment, including the teacher
to he sufferers from some variety
of intestinal parasites-hookworm
being the most common infection.
A comparison of the marks in
school made by the infected has
shown that the non-infectcd, rr
a rule do much better work and
with less effort than those who
are suffering from those health
destroying parasites.
The State Board of Health al
so wishes to respectfully direct
the attention of tin* trustees of
the various schools to the impor
tance of providing the proper
kind of closet, at the schools. It
is of more value to the children
and to the State to teach the
children decency, refinement and
how to take care of their health
than algebra, latin, geometry, or
even reading, ’citing, and ’rith
metic. The plans and specifica
tions for the construction of a
sanitary surface closet will l>c
sent to tile trustees, or to anyone
else in the State, who will write
for them.

Tlie hero of this play is John
Bunyan, the son of a traveling
tinker, who was born near Bed
ford ,at Elstow, England, in the
year 1628, when wickedness was
rampant thruout England. Ter
ror seemed to be the only restrain
ing influence during his child
hood. Day and night he had
gloomy forebodings of the wrath
to come, and imagined that the
apparitions of the evil spirits
were seeking to carry him away
with them.
With the development of years
he beeame more hardened,and the
dreams and nightmares of early
childhood had no effect upon him
His marriage in later years had
a decided influence on the life lie
led, and his final redemption.
His wife brought as part of
her dowery two volumes which
had belonged to her father, api
oils man: “The Plain Man’s
Pathway to Heaven,” and “The
Practice of Piety.” Whenever
the opportunity presented itself
Mrs. Bunyan would read to him
extracts from these books, and
tell him of the holy life her fa
ther had led. Though her efforts
to reform him created a desire to
turn from his evil ways, his heart
remained unchanged, and lie con
tinued to be a sinner as of old.
A Sabbath sermon once moved
him to reflect upon his evil
ways, and as he realized his de
gradation he became terrified,
and imagined lie heard a voice
from Heaven saying: “Wilt th.oi
leave thy sins and go to Heaven
or have thy sins and go to IIcll?’
Though he feared to continue his
sinful life he considered himself
beyond the pardon and forgive
ness of Heaven .and continued
his life of wickedness and imp
ety.
Some time later Bunyan met a
poor Christian whose pious con
versation filled him with a
yearning to live a better life, and
so h.e began to read the Bible.
As the teachings of the Bible
impressed him be begnin an out
ward reformation, wholly uncon
scious of the guidance of a High
er Power.
’Twas the conversation of three
pious women .near Bedford, that
brought him to realize that there
was something real in religion of
which lie was wholly ignorant.
Their words were never forgot
ten ; he immediately forsook the
company of the profane and asso
ciated himself with those who
were pious and religious.
Between the years 1055 and
1660 he often preached in the
neighborhood of Bedford, and in
the latter year was arrested and
put into the Bedford County Jail,
where for twelve years, with
but a brief interval of a few
weeks .he was a prisoner.
It is generally conceded that it
was during a later and briefer
imprisonment in the old town
jail on Bedford Bridge, in the
year 1676, that Bunyan wrote
the first part of the immortal
