An Indian’s devotion to the mem
ory of hia dead sister and desire to
carry ont an ancient custom, it was
learned, were responsible for the kid
naping of Matilda Peterson, the
twelve-year-<fid church organist from
Monroeville.
Jeremiah CoopeT, forty-eight
years old, Sioux Indian and gradu
ate of the Carlisle school, and his
younger brother, William, eighteen
years old, arc sought by the authori
ties for having stolen the girl.
The elder brother worked for a
time at the Peterson home. Accord
ing to the mother of the missing girl,
the Indian told her that since his
sister’s death he had seen a vision
which told him to adopt Matilda as
"hie foster sister. The girl was dark
and had jet black hair, and it was
said that he told her mother that she
so resembled his sister, to whom he
was devoted, that he must take her
according to the old Indian law and
raise her.
It was reported that the Indiana
had escaped into Pennsylvania. The
federal authorities at Philadelphia
have been notified.—Elmer (N. J.)

NAPOLEON.
Napoleon was bom in Ajaccio, on
the island of Corsica, and was by
breed and instinct an Italian. He
never was, except to the extent of
language and politics, a Frenchman.
To his dying day he was a dear lover
of his native land, and while life
lasted he remained true to the little
island that gave him to the werid.
It was while ho was a charity student
in France that Napoleon got his first
knowledge of the land that was to as
sist him to his large and lasting
fame.

Com Club Boys.
Tif there is any member of a
Boys’ Corn Club that we are
more interested in than another it
is the boy who has had hard luck
this year and whose, com yield
has been a disappointment to him
We particularly desire a careful
and full report from every such
hoy. Wo also specially request
that all such boys, who have from
any cause failed to get a good
crop on their acres, go right
ahead and gather and measure
the yield, just as if they had a
hundred bushels or more. And
be sure to come to the county con
test and bring yonr final report
and 10 of the best ears of corn
you hare.
And let all boys bear in mfad
that the award of prizes is not.
made on yield alone, but on yield
profit, report and 10-eftr exhibit.
It sometimes occurs that the
boy with the largest yield loses
the first prize for luck of atten
tion to the other three points—
profit, report and exhibit. The
boy who is careful and painstak
ing in his work all the way thru
is oftenest the winner .
Boys, sow your acre that you
have used this year to small grain
and prepare another acre for
your corn crop in 1014. We must
have more than one rich acre on
the farm. Now is the time to be
gin preparation for next year’s
crop. Wm. Bradford,
Asst. Agt. for Corn Clubs. Ce

what are said to be the most
shapely limbs in the world, will
be seen in Atlanta soon when
Anna Held comes to the Atanta

Why are Anna’s stockings
worth $250,000.
Because they are adorned with
a multitude of diamonds of vari
ous sizes whose mountings are
sewn fast to the hosiery.
Diamond studded stockings
have been seen in Atlanta before,
both on and off the stage, but
never anything that could re
motely touch in gorgeougnges or

Atlanta is going to get more

Discoveries of Opal ifn Nevada.
Mention has been made of the
opal deposits of Virgin Valley,
Humboldt County, Nev., in the
1 chapter on precious stones in sev
eral of the annual rejports on
the mineral resources of the
United States- published by the
| United States Geological Survey,
i The quality of the opals was thus
described in the report for 11112:
The best gem opal from this re
gion is unexcelled in variety and
brilliance of fire and color by
that from other localities. The
cut gems exhibit wonderful flash
es of green, blue yellow and red
of various shades. In some the
color is uniform over the whob
stone or over large areas, chang
ing as the gem is turned from
green to red or from red to blue
and so on. Some of the gems
show a rich ultramarine blue in
one position with green or red in
another. Many gems display va
rious bright colors arranged in
patches, and each patch changes
color as the atone is turned. The
brilliant flashes off peacock-feath
or colors obtained from the opal
of dark color yields a gem which
might be called black opal, but
most of it is not like the Austr;
lian gem of that name, since it
occurs in thick pieces and the
colors are less loalized. The ma
jority of the dark-colored
up matter how beautiful in re
flected light, become a rich red
djsh brown color in transmitted
light. Lighter colored opal, with
good color and fire is also found
and cuts into very beautiful gems
