tional Purity Congress in Menneap
olis recently it was brought out in
several addresses and papers that a
big factor in the white slave evil is
the parent’s neglect in bringing up
their daughters. In support of this
factor Clifford G. Roe, president of
the American Bureau of Moral Ed
ucation, has this to say:
“The term ‘white slavery’ has
broadened greatly in recent years.
In the past efforts to deal with the
social evil problem were mostly reg
ulative. Within the last seven or
eight years anew method of deal
ing with it has been edopted. A
scientific study has brought about
the adoption of the attitude of con
stant repression as the immediate
method and absolute repression of
commercial vice as the ultimate
ideal.
Neglect by the parents in bring
ing up their daughters is a big fact
or in the making of white slaves.
Mothers are often too bu-y attend
ing clubs, theaters and card parties
to find time to look after their
children. Fathers have a keener
interest in their properties than
they have for the welfare of their
daughters. Tliev let their children
grow up like weeds in the prairie,
to care for and look after them
selves.
The truth of this last statement
is too well known. How many
mothers in their desire to shine in
society almost forget they have
daughters? How many fathers do
not devote the proper amount of
time to the family because of busi
ness? It is seen in every city, and
while there are thousands of daugh
ters who grow up in such families
and become example to their par
ents, there are others who are
thrown into the whirlpool of society
with its varied temptations and
lacking the strong guiding hand of
the parent, fall.
The same thing is true in homes
where society is not the dominating
feature. Sometimes parents in
their efforts to keep the wolf from
the front door allow the back door
to swing open and the girl or boy
to go out.
So in many cases it comes back
to the parents to plague their de
clining years.
