AND ALFRED G. NEWELL
Talk of Honors Paid Robert
Adamson i<n New York
City.
Atlanta,, Ga. Doc. 24 —William
Ilurd Hi liver and Alfred (\ New
ell, who were Atlanta’s represen
tatives at the dinner given Hon.
Kobefitl Adamson in New York
have returned to this city and
give glowing accounts of the
honors which were heaped upon
the Atlantian and southerner who
in the past ten years has become
one of the big f'gures in New
York’s municipal affairs.
Mr. Hillyer declared that the
dinner, in his estimation, was
the most remarkable honor ever
paid in the north to a native Ge°i
gian at the metropilis, and in
some respects tile most remark
able ever revived by any New
York cit’zen. The* dinner, he
said was the outgrowth of the
spontaneous enthusiasm of the
whole of New York’s better cle
ment, for a man whose brilliant
and unselfish efforts had result
ed in the triumph of tin* Fusin
t eket at thy reef nt election.
“Father Knickerbocker’s fair
haired hoy” is what one of the
speakers called the adopted Geor
gan at tin* dinner, and Hob
Adamson’s work, says Mr. 11ill
yer, is something of which all
Georgians and southreners should
be proud.

THE CALL OF THE SOUTH
SCORES MODERN DANCES.
Atlanta, Dec. 24- The evils of
modern dances, sex dramas and
slit shirks are vigorously treat
ed in a leading editorial in th.e
currnet issue of Frost’s maga
zine, “The Call of tin* South.
“W e commend tin* action of
the churehes and women’s clubs
of Georgia/’ the editor says,and
goes on to comment on the ten
dency which has its outward man
itestation in such fancies:
“We must grapple with our im
pulses and control these groteque
tendene es. If is a kind of Hal
ly we’en madness from which we
must awake ourselves and get,
prop< rly on our feet amid the
new forces we are under, we must
regain our seriousness and self
poise.
“Should we fail to do this n
dividually and socially, we eith
er shall be carried deeper and
deeply into nervous and erratic
excesses, or Heaven will become
hopeless, and the hand of Divine
Helpfulness will he withdrawn.”
The first nervous tension of
modern existence is held princi
pally to blame for the change in
moral conditions
The Knocker.
The following definition of that
carbuule which afflicts most c<>m
lnun’tics, known as the knocker,
is thus given bjy an exchange:
“After God finished the rattle
snake, the toad and the vampire
H,* had some awful substance
left, with which, he made a knock
er A knocker is a two-legged
animal with a corkscrew soul, a
water sogged brain and a
combination backbone made of
jelly and glue. Where other peo
ple have a heart lie carries a tu
mor of rotten principles. When
the knocker comes down the
street honest men turn their
backs, angels from heaven take
precipate refuge beh'nd their
harps and the devil bar-locks the
tin* gates of hell.”
Commenting on the above arti
cle, iln* North Georgia Cjit zen, of
Dalton, aid n its last issue:
“W t ave read many descrip
tions, of the general knocker. We
have written a few ourselves, but
the best one coming under our
ohservaion is the one pr nted
above We clipped it from the
Dawson News, one of the state’s
leading weeklies. The Dawson
paper credits it to an exchange.
This is unfortunate. The author
should he known, so that a monu
ment of imperishaole bronze
might be erected to his memory.
However, there is much consola
tion in tin* reflection that what
he has said is a sufficient monu
ment.”
Title to Defend.
“Whaf are you going to call
the new baby!’’
“Reginald Claude,” replied Mr
Bliggins.
“U not ‘Reginald Claude’ a
rather affected name.”
“Yes l want him to grow up
to be a fighter, and I fancy that
‘Reginald Claud’ will start some
thing aevery time he goes to a
new school.”
