The other day I was at a rad
way station and purchased a tick
et for a short journey I took
that day While at the ticket
window there stood beside me
one of the world’s unfortunates.
Ilis clothing consisted of one old,
red shirt, so faded that its origi
nal color was not distinguishable,
and a pair of patched blue jeans
trousers. His hair was uncomb
ed and his personal appearance
was unkempt. Upon his face
were the unmistakable mark of
ignorance and a hard struggle
with the adversities of life. His
condition was deplorabUe, but
there were two little girls with
him whose, smileless little faces
vvere pitable indeed. There was
no suulight, there had been no
childish happiness, no merry
laughter had made music in the
hovel that they called home, and
Hunger had sat beside them ma
ny a long, dreary day, going to
their pallets with them, linger
ing in their dreams, jeering at
them when the morning awokt
again. A iran who sat with me
at the time, and whose heart is
as tender as a maiden’s, asked
the man where he w r as going. The
man replied that “he was g°ing
back to Kentuchy, because he had
made nothing in Texas for four
years/ 4 In such haste was he to
get on the train and commence
the journey back to the old home
that he left his ehange in the
window, and the agent had call
ed him back, knowing that the
seventy-five cents change repre
sented a large sum to him and
the children*
Life is full of such conditions,
and such unfortunate people are
all around us and about us. This
Up Among 1 the Hills.
W e have always been a little
prejudicial against the hilly re
gion of our state as a farming
section and we still appreciate
more and more the value of level
land for farming. We had occa
sion recently to go over to Ath
ens, Ga., up to Gainesville and
thence up to Dahlonega. Well,
we saw the hills right. We told
the driver we believed there
were million hills in Hall county
But we were surprised at the
homes these farmers had and at
the crops of corn and cotton they
had grown. They keep extending
the cotton belt. Many farmers
planted cotton in Lumpkin coun
ty this year for first time. The
first cotton gin was operated in
Dahlonega this year and many
a Lumpkin county man will have
to quit digging gold and go to
growing cotton. The coton crop
was unusually fine in Jackson
and Hall counties. So were the
crops of corn. These farmers
have no kick coming and they
were all feeling good. We cer
tainly rejoice with them —South-

Definitions of a Friend
The first person who comes in

out. *
A bank credit on which we can

Sel, sympathy, help and love
One who combines for you alike
the pleasures and benefits of so
ciety and solitude.
A jewel whose lustre the strong
acids of poverty and misfortune
cannot dim.
One who multiplies joys, divides
griefs, and whose honesty is in

One who loves the truth and
poor fellow had, no doubt, made
the best fight that he could to
provide for his family, handicap
ped as he was with the lack of
knowledge, and while he was
straining every nerve, eating out
his heart in a vain endeavor, may
be the Grim Reaper came into
the sunless home and carried
away v the mother of the two yel
low-haired girls, she yielding up
her tired body with little reluc
tance, except the thought of
leaving her babies motherleiss. I
cannot unravel the mystery why
there are so many of life’s unfor
tunates, why' the eyes of sweet
ittlle children should be dulled by
tlie tears and longings for things
they crave so much, and their
faces made gaunt by lack of food
while there are thousands of oth
er children with everything that
their hearts could desire and lux
uries piled upon luxuries laid at
their feet. One’s heart cannot
help but go out in sympathy for
the man, and especially th e chil
dren whose bodily hunger and
whose heart hunger is pitiable.
Maybe when the last summons
comes we will know why some
people are poor and lonely and
ignorant while others are rich.hap
py and contented There must be
a reason, for a w'ell-matured plan
runs through all the story of the
past and.the ages to come, out
lined £h)m the beginning, and hav
ing in view the final good of man
Perhaps some must suffer that
others may be induced to feel
sympathy, and be constrained to
