AND ALFRED C, NEWEL! I
a of UhinA.
Modern life in picturesque Chi
na is entertainingly given by Miss
Esther D. Nairn, wr ting from
iShaohsing. Slit* says .4
“It was a privilege to be alive
in a centuries-old empire to see
and hear the cities of that empire
fall with a world resounding
crash, and too see. the birth of a
new republic The rumors, the
consequent panic of the People,
the bloodst ring accounts of the
war, the rush, the feverish anxi
ety of the people are all burned
in my memory and these memoreb
along of my most precious posses
sions, for 1 can never again see
the fall of a Manchu dynasty.
“While in America I heard
much about the dirt in China and,
httle of its beauty. Of course
China is unthinkably dirty, but
but it is also indescribably beauti
ful. From our city wall with t’ e
whole countryside unrolling be
fore them we see hills and hills,
with their soft undulating sides
and their sharp jagged peaks;
then the water as the canals run
through tile green fields widen
ing in some places to the size of
a young river and then narrow
ing into ribbons just wide enough
to get under the small stone
bridge.
“Then the sunsets with their
wonderful colorings, the pale
greens, heliotrope, yellow, and
the dark purple which falls like
a rich mantle over those hills,
ft d the blazed trail of the canals
as (he water catches the flicker
lng sunlight and holds it captive.
“To l the right, watching all, is
the old/ pagoda, which has stood
silent, sentinel for no one knows
how many years until now its
very age and decay breath ro
mance and mystery I would like
you to see our starry nights and
the witching moonlight when our
compounds are bathed in the si
h'ut light and the black trees
stand guard around us.
<‘s, indeed the M.aster Artist

ol men. -Man out here does
seem such jm iiitsigiiif cant atom
among a million other insignifi
cant atoms who’s,, lives arc a
ceaseless struggle, and whose end
leaves not even a ripple behind.
“But t!n> hopeful side is that
this man whose soul seems s<>
warped anl dead can be quicken
ed and mdae to live with. such
goodness and intelligence that bis
Y.ery face shows h s godliness and
thoughtfulness. The greatest
hope in my mind is to take the
children into our schools and edu
cate them to look upon life in a
healthy, intelligent way; to
teach them how t.o live, not nieivl
to crawl thru life with one eye
open. Now is the tinle to make
our schools superior to the school
which the government is opening
and to keep them up to that,
standard at whatever cost.”
