THE holidays are practically
here. The Christmas spir
it spirit is at the door. Gems
and jewels alone typify the
truth of the Christmas season.
Every Christmas tree in Geor
gia, every stocking in the
state, every home in Winder,
should have some present large
or small, insignificant or royal
—the size matters not at Xmas
—some present from this store
should sparkle for its message
of love on Christmas morn
under every roof.

shows that the free citizens of
this great republic are the most
law-burdened people in the world.
It is shown that the Congress of
the United Status in the last four
teen years has created 17,880
Jaws and this number does not
include the enactments of the re
cent special session. In the two
years from 1906-1908 the legis
latures of the state passed a to
tal of 18,709 b‘ 11s and resolutions
—New Orleans Picayune.
According to another author
ity on this subfiect, “a citizen
would have to stop work ; read
studiously fourteen or fifteen
hours a day every day in the
yea r to know all the laws that
might affect him.” Yet igno
jrance of' the/ law does not) excuse.
In our day Thomas Jefferson
would find more reason than ev
er for declaring that the country
is governed best that is governed
least,” and for opposing a mul
tiplicity of laws. Yet our “pro
gressive” statesmen have count
less new laws up the’r sleeves,
many of them revolutionary in
vasions of the citizen’s rights.
But if our laws are legion now,
who can number them in that
m llenium close at hand when
women sent to legislative bodies
by their balloting sisters enthusi
astically apply themselves to
the, fascinating business. For,
judging by the utterances of
the suffragette leaders, women
legislators will be the most “jiro
gressive” of all the tribe now
misapplying that term. Their ef
forts to make man over by legis
lation and thrust into him a thorn
and virtues by means of the po
liceman’s club are foreshadowed
by Mrs. Puukhurst’s confession
that women want the ballot in or
der to “make men chaste”—Ma

PASSING STRANGE
(From Home? and Homestead)
In 1912, the money and solvent
debts returned for taxation by
the entire state amounted to SOO,
534,000.
For the week ending November
29 } the bank clearings of Atlan
ta amounted to $15,309,000.
That is to say, the money and
the various money-equivalents
passing through the banks of a
single city in Georgia in a sin
gle month more than equaled all
the property of this kind retirrn
ed for taxation in the entire
state!
Also, the state bank examiner
reports $136,000,000 on deposit
in the banks of.Georgia, or near
ly three times the amount of mon
ey and all other evidences of
debt returned for taxation.
Also there are $450,000,000 of
insurance in the state upon build
ings and merchandise
It is more than four times tlie
value of all the city and town
property on he tax books of the
'state; more than ten times our
tahxable wealth in cotton factor
ies, stocks and bonds; and more
than ten times the value of all
the merchandise in Georgia. It
is two and a half times the tax
value of all the improved land of
Georgia.
Is it any wonder that Judge
Hart says that not one-seventh of
the wealth of Georgia is on our
tax books.
